劇中老人強韌的生命力與意志力令人折服，他的自信是絕對自信，是不因環境變化而變化的自信，是不用與他人比較的自信。藉著與大海的博鬥，他想尋回年少時的意氣風發，並向大海討回對生命的救贖。
情節雖然簡單，卻將人生的意義深刻地表露無遺，他所著重的是人在奮鬥過程中所顯現的價值，而非最後得到的具體的物質報酬。正如老人所說：「人不是為失敗而生的，一個男子漢可以被消滅，但不能被打敗」。
This novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953, and contributed to the winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. It also broke the record for the publishing: 530 copies were sold within 48 hours.
This is a story about an aged Cuban fisherman, Santiago, going head-to-head with a giant marlin and sharks far out in the Gulf Stream. Persevering through three days of suffering alone at sea, he finally came back with nothing but a skeleton of a 18 foot, 1500 pound fish. The tragically heroic and sublime value reveals in Santiago's struggle to fight with the fate as the fish stubbornly and honorably refuses to die.
