Product Information

Director: Ozu Yasujiro

Ozu's first talkie is an early masterpiece that deals with his usual themes of family and the parent-child relationship. Ozu was one of the latest directors to change from silent to sound films. He uses the sound system developed by his cinematographer Mohara Hideo to striking effect. The story examines the motherly love of a peasant who gives up everything so that her son can have education in Tokyo. Ten years later, she pays her son a visit in Tokyo, believing that he has become a successful person. However, upon arrival, she finds that he is far from being successful. In fact, he is working as a teacher in an evening school and lives with his wife in poverty.

Great Expectations, Ozu-style Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Director Ozu Yasujiro's "The Only Son" tells of a mother who struggles in a nightmarish factory job in order to earn money to send her son to high school. Years go by, the son has moved to Tokyo, and the mother comes to visit. Unbeknownst to her, the son has married, has an infant child, lives in a dumpy industrial wasteland, and has managed to attain only a low-paying job as a night school geometry teacher.

The son is ashamed of his lack of success; his mother is appalled at his defeatist attitude. She wonders whether all of her sacrifices have been in vain. Somehow, out of this dark setting, Ozu manages to find a ray of hope, but I'm not sure even he believed in it.

This was Ozu's first talkie and perhaps his most manipulative and melodramatic film. Both the sound and picture quality of this print are inconsistent. Ozu fans will want to see this milestone in the director's career.
