An early film from director Ringo Lam, The Other Side Of A Gentleman provides audiences with an unusual, but potent star pairing: Brigitte Lin and Alan Tam! Jojo (Brigitte Lin) is a psychology student involved in a curious experiment. Her group wishes to take a narcissistic playboy and subjugate his selfish tendencies using the proper psychological tools. More importantly, they need the right woman for the job. The target is Alan (Alan Tam), but their initial candidates for his partner are quickly rebuffed. Luckily the perfect girl is in their midst. The group uses Jojo to tame Alan's wild ways, but the experiment has unforeseen consequences. Jojo begins to sense the cruelty of their work, even though the experiment is a success. In fact, it may be too successful, as Alan becomes fixated with Jojo, even after discovering her true game AND fact that she's engaged to a university professor! Can Alan convince Jojo that he's the one for her? The incomparable Brigitte Lin anchors The Other Side Of A Gentleman, a romantic comedy drama that packs surprising emotional punch!

I bought this movie because of Tung Wai. I don´t like Alan Tam, maybe I hate him even more after I´ve seen this movie. He´s character was creepy and crazy. It felt like he was the only one in love, and forced her too love him. I hate the ending. The story was pointless and ridiculous. This movie was really bad.

"The Other Side of a Gentleman" is one of my favorite Alan Tam movies and he stars with Brigitte Lin who was a very sought-after actress in the 1980s. I really enjoy the pairing of them and feel they have great on-screen chemistry. Brigitte plays a well-bred psychology student who comes from a good home. And she is engaged to an elite and highly respected college professor. Alan plays a guy who works at a store selling jeans. Brigitte's psychology group devise a plan to observe and study the behavior of a not-so-educated guy. She has to befriend him so that they can study him. But he falls in love with her and even willing to give his life to her. She somehow has fallen in love with him too, but fights her feelings because she is set to marry the college professor.

I love this movie. In the end, it is very touching. I like Alan's character very much. Even though his character is not very educated, he really knows how to treat people nicely. He is kind and considerate of other people's feelings. The college professor could not be compared to him. No matter how much education and how elite the college professor is, he does not understand what it is to truly love someone.

Alan Tam - The Perfect Gentleman Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a heart rending tale between the two central characters. Alan Tam meets and falls in love with Ching Hsai Lin and takes part unknowingly in her scheme. The scheme is that she has said she can get any man to fall for her. When Alan eventually finds out what is happening he tries to break up the impending wedding between Ching Hsai Lin and her fiancée at any cost. Will he succeed? Watch and see. This is a must view film - very dark in places but the storyline keeps you routing for the two characters to get together. A joy to watch.

Alan Tam is at his best in this film. It is a humerous and touching tale of romance. Tam is an experiment of the typical man but is taken in by the charade and falls for the girl who, in turn starts to realise the experiment should be stopped as she falls in love with Tam. The film is a rollercoaster ride of emotions from the humerous to the sentimentality of romance. A film definitely worth viewing again and again. Watch out for the brilliant ending
