Released through Gosfilmofond, the film archive of Russia which holds one of the world's richest collection of films, the fourth installment of The Past Unearthed series, The Past Unearthed The 4th: Moving Images From Gosfilmofond contains six gems excavated by the Korean Film Archive during from 1994 to 2006. The collection features films which are estimated to have been released in the late 30s or the early 40s, and offer invaluable insight into the realities of Japanese colonialism in Korea.

The Past Unearthed The 4th: Moving Images From Gosfilmofond comes with the following six films: Choong who eh Joseon ("The End of Joseon") (1937), Joseon Woori eh who bang ("On The Home Front") (1939), Joseon eh ae kook il ("Joseon's Patriotic Day") (1940), Il bon shill ok ("The History of Japan") (1943), Joseon shibo je 11 bo ("Joseon News, 11th ) (1943), and Han sung shim eh him ("The Power of Devotion") (1935).

Choong who eh Joseon ("The End of Joseon", 1937)
Released immediately following Japan's victory in the Sino-Japanese War, this war propaganda film depicts the social atmosphere of Joseon during the turbulent times. Offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Joseon Governor General Office and the diffusion of Japanese language in Joseon, the film provides fascinating images such as Joseon women in kimonos cheering for the Imperial Japanese army, a troop train full of gleeful volunteers departing for war, hard-working Joseon women helping out in the production of ammunition, and war fund-raising events and campaigns.

Joseon Woori eh who bang ("On The Home Front", 1939)
Aimed at promoting active Korean participation in the war for the Imperial Japanese Army, the film sees the people of Joseon mobilized into a string of organized units such as a youth group helping to recruit young volunteers, a group promoting the sale of war bonds, and an exclusive organization that focuses on donating aircrafts and anti-aircraft machine guns.

Joseon eh ae kook il ("Joseon's Patriotic Day", 1940)
Produced by the Joseon Governor General Office, this propaganda film was made to boost the "General Mobilization of National Spirit", a government-inspired campaign designed to integrate Japan and Joseon as well as mobilize Joseon men and women to war. Some of the images include the hoisting of Japan's national flag; people paying allegiance to the flag at Shinto shrine; and a special ceremony thrown for exceptionally patriotic citizens.

Il bon shill ok ("The History of Japan", 1943) Shot in a newsreel style, the film provides interesting statistics on the total number of military trainees and volunteers during the years 1937 - 1939, and offers a closer look at the physical examination process of recruit volunteers, the training facilities for Joseon Governor General Office's infantry volunteers, close-order drills, and sword mastery and physical training programs. Joseon shibo je 11 bo ("Joseon News, 11th", 1943)
Produced by Joseon Film Corporation just before Japan's defeat in the Pacific , this newsreel-style film depicts the lives of soldiers in training, and tells a moving story about soldiers killed in action and their surviving family members.

Han sung shim eh him ("The Power of Devotion", 1935)
Used as a propaganda tool to highlight Joseon people's dutiful role as taxpayers of Imperial Japan, this silent feature film tells the story of a young man who launches a tax collection campaign for the construction of the town's bridge. Inspired by his speech, the townspeople quickly make their tax payment - except for Mr. Kwon, the richest man in town. Ashamed of his father's ignorance, his son Hak Ryul decides he will make the payment himself without telling his father. But suspecting foul play, the father tails after the son and ends up witnessing his own son's accidental death. In repentance, he donates all of his wealth to the government.

This edition comes with a Korean/English reference guide.

“발굴된 과거” DVD의 세 번째 시리즈인 <병정님>과, 네 번째 시리즈인 <고스필모폰드 발굴영상모음>이 출시되었다. “발굴된 과거”는 한국영상자료원 고전영화 컬렉션 DVD의 하위(branch) 브랜드로, 한국영상자료원이 해외 아카이브에서 발굴한 영화․영상들을 복원 및 연구하여 DVD로 출시하는 시리즈이다. 자료원은 2007년 <발굴된 과거 : 1940년대 일제시기 극영화 모음>을, 2008년 <발굴된 과거2 : 1930년대 조선영화 모음>을 출시하여 국내외 한국영화 팬 및 한국학, 한국영화 연구자들에게 호평을 받은 바 있다.

줄거리

1. 총후의 조선(銃後の朝鮮)
소화 12년(1937년) 중일전쟁에서 일본의 승전을 홍보하는 전쟁 홍보영화. 조선총독부의 전경, 기모노를 입고 일장기를 든 여인들이 황군을 응원하는 모습, 출정하는 지원병들을 태운 군용열차 출발 장면, 전쟁 지원을 위한 모금•기부운동, 어깨띠를 두르고 군수품을 제작하는 조선 여인들, 군수물자를 실어 나르는 군인들, 비녀를 뽑아 전쟁자금으로 기부하는 조선 여인들 등.
2. 조선 우리의 후방
전시총동원체제 구축에 따른 동원 목적의 홍보영화. 경성부민회의 비행기 헌납, 형무소 죄수들의 고사기관총 헌납, 전쟁지원을 위한 연합청년단 발단식, 무한 함락 축하식, 중국 영사 일행의 조선신궁 참배, 이태리 및 몽골 사절단의 조선 방문, 채권 매입 독려 등.
3. 조선의 애국일(朝鮮の愛國日)
국민정신총동원을 위한 선전영화. 일장기 게양식, 일장기를 게양하는 마을 주민들, 교복을 입고 의례 하는 어린 조선 학생들, 신사에서 기도하는 모습, 학교에서 열을 맞추어 바닥을 닦는 학생들, 싸리비를 들고 제식으로 행진하는 학생들, 애국신민들에 대한 포장(褒狀) 수여식, 국기 하강식 사이렌에 멈춰 서서 묵념하는 모습, 국민체조 등.
4. 일본실록
전쟁홍보를 위한 뉴스릴 형식의 영화, 쇼와 13년(1937년)부터 15년(1939년) 사이의 지원자 수와 입소자 수 등에 대한 설명, 지원병의 신체검사 장면과 출정식 모습, 조선총독부 육군병지원자 훈련소 전경, 아침 기상과 내무반 정리, 제식훈련과 검술훈련, 유격훈련 등.
5. 조선시보 제11보
태평양전쟁 패전이 임박한 시기에 제작된 전쟁홍보 뉴스릴 영화. 1953년부터 '대한뉴스'로 이름을 바꾼 이승만 정부의 '대한전진보'의 전신에 해당한다. 전사한 군인의 유품과 유가족들, 군사훈련을 받는 군인들, 행진하는 어린 해군 소년병들의 모습 등.
6. 한 『성심』의 힘
납세를 독려하는 내용의 조선 무성 극영화. 뱃사공 일을 하던 청년이 어느 신사와의 대화로 느낀 바 있어 교량 건설을 위한 세금 징수 운동을 벌인다. 청년은 돌아가신 아버지 소유의 전답을 동리 소유로 기탁하여 공동 경작케 하고 함께 성실하게 일하고 납세할 것을 권한다. 청년의 연설에 감화 받은 동리 주민들은 부지런히 일하며 세금 납부에 동참하지만 동리에서 가장 부유한 권씨는 납세를 거부한다. 권씨의 아들 학률은 체납자인 자린고비 아버지 대신에 스스로 돈을 모은다. 다시 납세일이 오자 학률은 세금을 내기 위해 저금통을 깨어 돈을 들고 나가고, 아들의 거동을 수상하게 여긴 권씨가 뒤를 쫓는다. 학률은 세금을 내고 돌아오는 길에 그만 언덕에서 굴러 떨어지고 만다. 학률의 죽음을 보고 뉘우친 권씨는 거금의 재산을 기탁하여 동리 앞의 강에 다리를 놓는다.

작품 설명

러시아 국립 아카이브, 고스필모폰드의 발굴영상들

네 번째 시리즈로 나온 <고스필모폰드 발굴영상 모음>(1935년경~1943년경)은 러시아 국립 아카이브인 고스필모폰드(Gosfilmofond of Russia)를 통해 1994년부터 2006년까지 한국영상자료원이 발굴한 영상들을 모아 출시했다. 이번에 수록된 영상은 모두 6편이다.
조선총독부에서 제작한 <총후의 조선>(1937)은 중일전쟁 승전 직후에 만들어진 홍보영화이다. <조선 우리의 후방>(1939년경)은 조선인을 대상으로 전시동원체제에 동참할 것을 호소하는 문화영화이다. 역시 조선총독부에서 제작한 <조선의 애국일>(1940)은 ‘국민정신총동원’을 위한 선전영화이다. 또 <일본실록>(1943년경)은 전쟁 홍보를 위한 뉴스릴 영화이고, 조선영화제작주식회사가 제작한 <조선시보 제11보>는 태평양전쟁 패전이 임박한 시기에 제작된 전쟁 홍보 뉴스릴 영화이다. 이 기록영상들은 일제가 독려하는 총동원 체제의 광경을 고스란히 담고 있다. 마지막으로 <한 『성심』의 힘>(1935년경)은 심영과 김연실이 출연해 납세의 의무를 홍보하는 문화영화이다. 일제 강점기의 실상을 풍부하게 포착하고 있는 6편의 영상들은 현재의 우리에게 많은 고민거리를 안겨 줄 것이다.
