Although the plot of The Phantom of the Opera is so well-known that it need not be repeated here, the film intelligently make use of cinematic elements to refresh the audience with an old story. Emmy Rossum glows in her role as the opera genius Christine Daae, and Gerard Butler successfully convey the menace and sensuality as the Phantom through his acting as well as his songs. The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly in the film which charms Daae and the audience alike. The Phantom of the Opera also features diva Minnie Driver who has her voice dubbed in the film but sings the closing-credit number.

Watch it that's all I ask of you. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I was so surprised that Phantom - the movie didn't get all the nominated Oscars. Unlike some other musical film Phantom - the movie was pure to it's original stage production and the added bits was a real plus. Emmy Rossum has a passable voice and a one dimentional wooden kind of face expression throughout the film. But I urged any viewers if they have a chance they must come to see the London stage production. I know years ago The Phantom was on tour in HK with a great cast but the London's theatre make all the difference. Phantom - the movie is a MUST buy and you will watch again and again to discover bits that you have missed out when you first seen it.

Forget the VCD abd get the DVD Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has one of the best musical score. Of course, it would have been wonderful to have Michael Crawford star as the Phantom, but no point crying over split milk. Gerard Bulter is a great alternative choice and he has added a certain sexual tension that I haven't seen in other Phantoms on stage. However, I think most would agree with me, if the Phantom is so attractive like Gerard why would Christine go for Raul? Butler's singing is adequate but I did find myself holding my breath when he reached his high notes and that does distract me from watching the film. As for the female lead Emmy Rossum, she was an understandable choice - a much younger actress, looked great on screen but with same expression on her face. I read in an interview that Emmy said she was too big for the small screen ( TV ) . She did look good on the big screen and she can sing too. Both Miranda Richardson as Madame Giry and Minnie Driver as Carlotta were perfectly cast. ( I am only disappointed that they didn't give Minnie the chance to sing the new added song at the Oscars. But that's show business for you ). In conclusion Phantom is one of the best musical film in recent years and still one of the best work by Webber.

A must-have! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Even if you bought the 2 DVD special edition from the US you'll want to add this very special set to your Phantom collection.

This set includes a lovely 'Behind the Mask' 14 page full-color booklet, something the US edition could have used. The extras really make this set and include the original promo video of the stage musical, (Yup, the cross-eyed silver-masked Phantom) four other stage promo videos with Sarah Brightman in her role (MOTN, AIAOY, POTO, WYWSHA) TV spots for the movie, a clip that must have played at the premire of the film with Andy and others, greeting cards with small clips from the featurettes, all the extras from the US two-disc set and a new 15 minute video about the music itself. There is more too including a root menu that plays both video and music. If you loved either the film or the musical you must add this gem to your collection.
