ナチス・ドイツがポーランドに侵攻した1939年9月、ウワディクことウワディスワフ・シュピルマンはワルシャワのラジオ局でショパンを演奏していた。ほどなく街はドイツ軍に占拠され、ゲットーへの強制移住などユダヤ人への様々な締め付けが始まる。ピアニストとして活躍していたウワディクもまた、住み慣れたわが家を追われ、家族と共にゲットーへと移り住む。そして、彼はそこでカフェのピアノ弾きとして職を得、不自由で屈辱的な生活ではあったが、周囲がドイツ兵やユダヤ人警察の残虐行為によって命を落としてゆく中、静かに時をやり過ごす。しかし、そんな生活も2年が過ぎた頃から状況は更に悪化する。多くのユダヤ人が貨車で強制収容所へと移送され始め、ウワディクたち一家も死の収容所行きの列車に乗る日がやって来る。列車に向かって移動する人の群の中に埋もれていたウワディクだったが、ユダヤ人警察にいる友人へラーによって列から引き離され、彼ひとりが辛くも収容所送りを免れる。そして、ゲットー内の強制労働に従事しながら、ウワディクは脱出の機会を窺う…。
巨匠ロマン・ポランスキー監督が、実在のピアニスト、ウワディスワフ・シュピルマンの自伝を映画化。自身もゲットーで過ごした経験を持つポランスキー監督が、ナチスのホロコーストを奇跡的に生き延びたピアニストの姿、そしてナチスの残虐行為を事実に基づいてありのままに描き、戦争のリアリズムを静かに力強く映し出している。また、完全な被害者として描かれがちなユダヤ人の中にも憎むべき者がおり、反対にナチスの中にも善人がいたという公平な語り口が新鮮だ。2002年カンヌ国際映画祭パルムドール、アカデミー賞主演男優賞・監督賞・脚色賞の3部門を受賞。この作品でオスカーを獲得したエイドリアン・ブロディの演技はもちろん、代役なしで臨んだピアノ演奏のシーンは圧巻である。

many films ,but none of them are better than it .
