헨리 빅스는 가난한 서민들이 사는 마을의 교회 목사이며, 그의 아내 줄리아는 성가대에서 찬송가를 부르는 가수이다. 줄리아는 결혼 전, 재즈클럽에서 노래도 부르고 친구들도 많이 사귀는 쾌활한 성격이었지만, 결혼한 후에는 교회일로 항상 바쁜 남편때문에 혼자 버려진듯한 외로움을 느끼며 살아가고 있다. 시간이 지날수록 줄리아의 외로움은 남편에 대한 불평으로 이어지고 급기야 이들은 사소한 일로 자주 다투게 된다.
