Directed by John Hau, The Pretty Women is a Sex and the City-style story of three women living in Shanghai, and how they perceive and pursue love. Acclaimed actress Cecilia Yip stars as a strong career woman who refuses to face up to her feelings for her boss (Ray Lui), while Taiwan beauty Angus Chang (Fluffy Rhapsody, Toast Boy's Kiss) plays a beautiful and innocent young woman with a rich, cheating boyfriend. Zhou Lei, who also appeared in Hau's 90s romps Lost Control and Ballistic Kiss, completes the trio as a doe-eyed aspiring singer obliviously caught between a record company executive and a piano teacher. Where will life and love lead these three women?

Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware!)
| Pity poor Cecilia Yip! It wasn't long ago that she was headlining major films with Chow Yun Fat and other HK luminaries. Now she is stuck in dreck like "The Pretty Women". Miss Yip deserves better. Just how bad is "The Pretty Women"? Let me count the ways. The joyless script offers no wit, little story, and no characters of any significant interest. The cinematography is crude and the editing may be the worst I've ever seen. (There is one scene which ends by cutting off an actor's line in mid-word!) The lighting often is garish. The sound mixing is awful, frequently burying the dialogue under tedious incidental music. The English subtitles are stilted. The performances of the supporting cast are so amateurish that I can assume only that those "actors" truly are amateurs. In one scene, male lead Ray Lui clearly is reading his lines off a cue card being held offscreen; apparently he couldn't be bothered to memorize his lines. On the plus side, the three lead actresses -- Cecilia Yip, Angus Chang, and Zhou Lei -- truly are pretty women. Unfortunately, that's the only positive thing I can think to say about this stinker. |
