Professional Review of "The Princess Blade (Hong Kong Version)"

April 28, 2009

The Princess Blade takes place in a lost world existing in a future 500 years from now. Yuki is originally a clan princess but the death of her parents brings her into the hands of an organization of assassins. From that moment on Yuki is trained as one of the best killing machines in this group which is employed by the government to eradicate rebels. One day, Yuki however is told that her mother was actually murdered by her leader Byakurai. She starts her revenge by trying to kill him but in vain. In her escape she meets one member of the rebel forces Takashi and receives the love and care that she has never had. It turns out that these two young people share the same fate of being betrayed by their respective organization and they together are desperate to break out from a heavy siege. With her determination and long-time training as a killer, Yuki eventually succeeds in getting her revenge.

Based on a 70's comic story by Koike Kazuo and Kamimura Kazuo, The Princess Blade is a combat movie featuring the swimming-suit model Shaku Yumiko. Because of its attractive title, The Princess Blade as well as the Fujita Toshiya adaptation, has always been a hit. This time it is put onto the silver screen and one big selling point is of course the leading actress who plays the resolute princess. Having built up her popularity as a sexy swimming-suit model posing seductively in photo albums and image videos, Shaku Yumiko is well ready to step out of the swimming pool and dive into the movie business. In The Princess Blade, she plays Yuki the professional killer in stunning ancient costume. Her leading man is Ito Hideaki who plays Takashi. These two start off as enemies but trust and romance starts to grow between them when they find themselves being victims of betrayal. In addition to action and romance, this movie also offers your eyes the best views by scenarios that were shot at Asagiri Plateau.

Shaku Yumiko said in one interview that she was so thrilled by the chance to be the leading actress but still did not have any clue why she was chosen by director Sato Shinsuke to star in such an action movie. Action does play a huge part in The Princess Blade and it is evidenced by the director's inviting Donnie Yen Tze-dan as action choreographer. Donnie Yen is a talented action actor and choreographer in Hong Kong. In recent years he has been active behind the screen working as an action choreographer and director with works such as The Twins Effect and Protege de la Rose Noire. With Donnie in the house, "The Princess Blade" features spectacular combat scenes where one single actor is capable of fighting against a considerable number of people at the same time. Shaku Yumiko has also been trained by Donnie Yen before the shooting and that is why this Japanese model can show such sophisticated Chinese martial arts in the film.

very good Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
in fact,i wasn't very into japanese movies.but i was told that i should try it, because japanese movies are so good.i didn't want to buy something expensive,so i wanted to buy a vcd which shouldn't be too expensive, with many stars.i saw this and it was quite cheap.it really surprised me:it has many action scenes, very bloody though, but i kinda liked it.there were also some funny scenes and the main artist were cool too (although they were totally strangers to me).i didn't expect it to be good, because it was so cheap.now i'm happy to have it.if you like action, then this is a must buy for you!

Very dissapointing Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
I can't say it's a bad movie, but it's not good either. It's the kind of movie that could be much better but makes you very dissapointed. The story is not exciting, nothing new anyway. The action is good, but the action scenes are not many. You can feel bored more than one time and more than two.

"SOME" action scenes good rest of the movie bad Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
i bought this movie with high hopes from good reviews but was disappointed. some action scenes seemed korny or overdone with a little amount of action scenes that were "good". as you watch the movie 3/4 of the way the plot seems very very plain. the antagonist doesnt even seem like an antagonist the scenery doesnt even match the plain plot. then how the ending how they just show her staring out with a sword. doesnt explain anything or what the character is thinking. okay bottom line. some action is good some FEW scenes may be good/decent but the story and reasoning behind everything is terrible or so out of place.

Sad Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Sad movie. It's fun to see all that sword fighting though.. and especially to have a strong female character. But the movie is unrealistic, but then again, it's just a movie. The unreaslitic parts that bug me.. she is wounded and loses A LOT of blood.. but yet she doesn't die. Her hand is seriously injured (I think you actually hear the bones crack) yet she recovers and is able to fight w/ her full ability... yep.

Good...but... Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
It was a good movie but half of the time the English Subtitles was really bad. It did not go with what the characters were saying at all. So i didn't understand most of it.
