The Proud Youth

YesAsia Editorial Description

First published in 1967, Jin Yong's literary masterwork "Xiao Ao Jiang Hu" (The Smiling Proud Warrior) became an instant martial arts classic. With its gripping tale of friendship, betrayal, heroism, villainy, and love, its no wonder that the text went on to inspire a slew of film and television adaptations, ranging from the 1984 serial starring future superstar Chow Yun Fat, to an entire trilogy of films in the 1990s featuring such greats as Sam Hui, Jet Li, and Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia! But long before those adaptations saw the light of day there was The Proud Youth, the stunning 1978 Shaw Brothers production directed by Sun Zhong, the man behind such widely-varied films as Big Bad Sis and The Sugar Daddies.

In this reinterpretation of the famous tale, Wang Yu, co-star of the martial arts classic Dirty Ho, headlines the film, inhabiting the role of the Ling Hu Chung character from the original novel. As in the source text, the hero finds himself caught right in the middle of an all-out clan war, all in search for a legendary manuscript that is rumored to hold the key to complete and total supremacy over the martial world! But at what cost? And with so many people lusting after the manuscript, it's only a matter of time before someone gets their hands on it, but who? Discover the truth in this pulse-pounding swordplay saga featuring Si Si as Wang Yu's love interest, the irrepressible Ku Feng in a supporting role, and Tien Ching taking up the part of Asia The Invincible, the role later made famous by Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia in Swordsman 2 and 3!

Product Information

導演:孫仲
Director: Sun Chung

Sun Chung had made a name for himself directing satirical comedies and modern day crime thrillers when he started exploring the kung-fu genre with this fascinating tale which mixes music and martial arts. Revered choreographer Tang Chia leads a great action cast (including Dirty Ho - Wang Yu, and award-winning actor - Ku Feng) in a tale of conflicting clans and a mysterious song called "The Proud One" which leads to slowly blossoming love as well as sudden death.

It's entertaining Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This movie is entertaining and moves along at the right pace. The young Wang Yu who is almost always cast in kungfu movies astounds with his swordplay skills. He looks good, dashing and imposing. Shih Sze may look ladylike but she has her own share of action scenes. Being Cheng Pei Pei's successor, she of course excels in them. An added bonus is guest star Ling Yun who leaves an unforgettable mark in the few scenes he appears in.
The only disappointment to me is Tien Ching who plays Asia The Invincible. He is no match for Brigitte Lin in Swordsman 2.

This was adapted from Jin Yong popular novel. However, thanks to that "brilliant" script writer/director who had renamed all the characters in the movie. The lead character "Ling Hu Chong" was now known as "Mr Nan-gong}; so were the rest. I just don't understand why a need for such rename. It is ridiculous!

Next is the mismatch couple. Shih Sze is definitely much elderly than Wang Yu. Director Sun's judgement is really questionable!

Despite all these flaws, the action is still commendable.
