In the book of Exodus, the ten biblical plagues were God's punishment to Egypt in order to make the pharaoh free the Israelites. In The Reaping, the plagues come to a southern town in the bible belt. After the deaths of her daughter and husband, former missionary Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) turned away from her faith and instead made a career out of debunking religious phenomena. Her latest case brings her to the quiet Louisiana town of Haven, which turns out to be anything but. Katherine has come to investigate a report that the waters of the town river turned into blood after the death of a local boy. After she arrives, the plagues continue to fall upon the town, one by one, and Katherine gradually uncovers the shocking secret behind the biblical horrors.
