The Red Detachment Of Women (DVD) (English Subtitled) (China Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Propaganda aside, this 1960 film is a truly significant work in the history of Chinese films. The film is helmed by acclaimed director Xie Jin (who passed away in October 2008), and it won several honors at the first Hundred Flowers Awards, including Best Drama Film, Best Director, Best Actress (for Zhu Xijuan), and Best Supporting Actor (for Chen Qiang).

Written by Liang Xin, the film is set in the 1930s and tells the story of Wu Qinghua (Zhu), a maid in Hainan who escapes from the clutches of a villainous landlord (Chen). Wu joins the Chinese Communist Party, and leads the women's army in the fight to liberate the oppressed lower class.

The Red Detachment of Women was later adapted into a ballet (which was performed in front of U.S. President Nixon when he visited China in 1972) and a Peking Opera, both of which were "model plays" during the Cultural Revolution.

Entertaining propaganda film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Red Detachment of Women" is, first and foremost, a propaganda film which sought to increase the Chinese people's love of the Communist Party, seen here as the motive force behind the movement to free the people from the corrupt reign of cruel local warlords.

The film tells of a young slave girl who is sorely mistreated by the warlord who owns her. A Communist revolutionary, disguised as a wealthy merchant, manages to free the slave girl. She then enlists in the Communist women's army. After first messing up as an army scout when she lets her desire for revenge overcome her military discipline, she redoubles her efforts to become a good soldier. Ultimately, she becomes a leader in the effort to free Hainan from the grip of the warlords.

When the film periodically serves up almost quasi-religious sermons in support of the Party, it bogs down. Fortunately, those Communist sales pitches are only intermittent. The rest of the film is a surprisingly well-executed melodrama featuring damsels in distress, truly heroic heroes, and truly evil, cadaverous bad guys.

Schematic? Yes, of course. Subtle? Absolutely not. Enjoyable? You bet! This is one piece of propaganda that continues to entertain.
