The Wai clan is ruthlessly wiped out by Lui Wai-leung. Kwai Yuk-sheung, a maternal relative of the Wais, breaks the siege with the newborn Wai heir Chung-fai in her arms. Kwai is a harsh, stringent guardian to Chung-fai, who finds solace in the company of To-chi, Lui's daughter, unbeknownst to Chung-fai. Lui seeks to form ties with the people in power by betrothing his daughter to Lord Hon King-tin. The fleeing bride writes Chung-fai a loving farewell letter, which because of retinue officer Wu To-chung's blunder, never reaches the intended addressee, leaving a bitter Chung-fai grudging To-chi's fickleness. Wielding the family heirloom, the Pitiless Sword, Chung-fai leads his tribe to a revanche. Hon further incites the feud between the Wai and Lui clans by sending reinforcements to Lui's defence, hoping to subjugate the two forces and ultimately usurps the throne. Chung-fai attempts to assassinate Lui but is pressed to sign a letter of surrender with To-chi being held hostage by Hon. The Wai clan stage an uprising against Hon. Lui initiates a mutiny against Hon and kills the lord on the battlefield following the realisation of his treacherous scheme. Lui's self-reproach and apologies finally resolve the enmity between the two clans.
