TVB's The Shell Game is credited for starting the wave of gambling-themed television dramas in the 80s and 90s. Produced by Wong Tin Lam, the pioneering series ruled the ratings in 1980, and is still widely considered the best of the genre. Its cast is headed by Liza Wang, Patrick Tse, Yeung Kwan, Simon Yam, and Regina Tsang, and the crew is made up of future big names including Wong Jing (Wong Tin Lam's son) and Johnnie To on writing and directing duties. Even the theme song written by Joseph Koo & Wong Jim and performed by Liza Wang is a classic still much beloved today.
Set in 1930s Guangzhou, The Shell Game tells how local bully Hung Biu wants to dominate all the casinos in town, but is foiled by master gambler Law Sei Hoi (Patrick Tse). Law is in love with Tam Siu Tong (Liza Wang), sister of his disciple Tam Sing (Simon Yam). In an attempt to eliminate Law once and for all, Hung Biu seeks the aid of legendary gambler Cheuk Yut Fu (Yueng Kwan), and the battle begins...
The Shell Game II, the sequel made a year later, was further boosted by the addition of then-rising star Chow Yun Fat. Patrick Tse plays another master gambler To Yut Siu, who defeats the young challenger Lung (Chow Yun Fat), but is impressed enough to accept him as his disciple. The two use their gambling skills to help people, and they become well respected in Shanghai; but when they both fall for a girl named Fok Si Ling (Liza Wang), their enemies are waiting to strike...

THE SHELL GAME 1 & 2
| ANOTHER 80'S CLASSIC.BOUGHT THE DVD FORMAT AFTER BUYING VCD FORMAT.QUITE SATISFIED BUT THE THEME SONG OF SHELL GAME 2 WERE LEFT OUT AFTER EACH EPISODE ENDIND.STILL NOT UNCUT VERSION.HOPE TVB WILL RELEASE REAL UNCUT VERSION.DOESN'T MIND PAYING EXTRA IF WE CAN GET THE UNCUT VERSION. |
