Where there is shadow, there is light
Best-selling Taiwan artist-writer Jimmy Liao's latest illustrated storybook The Starry Starry Night is dedicated to kids who don't know how to communicate with the world, kids like the protagonists of this affecting tale of childhood friendship. The short and sweet story follows a lonely young girl who keeps to herself. She can't share her thoughts and fears with anyone, until the day she meets a boy as stubborn and lonely as her.

In comparison to some of Liao's other works, The Starry Starry Night has a less fanciful premise but no less imaginative and spectacular artwork, and certainly no less heartful story. Even more so than his previous books, The Starry Starry Night pulsates with the raw honesty of its young protagonists through less lyrical, more direct passages: "I love Mom, Mom loves me, but I don't understand her, and she doesn't understand me." It's almost uncanny how Liao so poignantly captures the heartbreaking significance of silence at the dinner table, or a phone call in the middle of the night. Young readers can connect with the loneliness, frustration, and fantasy, but adults can read further between the lines and images to memories and times gone by, feelings and experiences never forgotten.

The brilliance of Jimmy Liao is his ability to speak to adult hearts through the unhindered imagination and candor of a child's mind. The Starry Starry Night is not a children's book, but rather a precious childhood memory drawn in colorful strokes. A picture is worth a thousand words, and that's true with Liao's works. The Starry Starry Night's simple story and piercing sentiments are easy to understand even without Chinese literacy, and indeed the climax of the book - when the two children run away on a beautiful adventure - is told completely in illustrations.

Van Gogh's The Starry Night has meant many things to many people over the years. For Liao, it serves as inspiration for this melancholic memory about that unforgettable summer and its brightest, loneliest starry night.
