The Tournament (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) VCD

Although not as well known as Lady Whirlwind or Hapkido, 1974's The Tournament has all of the elements that made those movies cult classics, including director Wong Feng, fight choreographer Sammo Hung, and - of course - Angela Mao. The former Peking opera actress and black belt hapkido master became a minor sensation in the West following the kung fu craze of the early 1970s, and in the East she was an established A-list action star. Golden Harvest had perfected the Mao formula by the time filming began on The Tournament, and the movie hits all the familiar notes. Carter Wong (Hapkido, When Taekwondo Strikes) performs his usual duty as the male action lead opposite Mao, and - perhaps best of all - Mao beats up a pre-celebrity Sammo Hung for the umpteenth time.

This time out Angela and Carter play a pair of siblings on a mission to restore their family's reputation. Their father, a renowned martial arts instructor, is publicly disgraced after one of his students loses a crucial tournament to a Thai kickboxer. His pupils abandon him, his daughter's fiance breaks off their engagement, and the old man is driven to suicide. Determined to salvage their father's legacy, the newly-single daughter and her brother combine the family fighting style with Thai kickboxing to create a powerful hybrid martial art. Armed with their newly acquired skill, the siblings journey to Bangkok for a thrilling rematch.

Lau is a respected martial art teacher in Hong Kong with a lot of followers. Knowing Chang, one of his students is forced to take part in a boxing tournament in Bangkok, he sends his son Hong there, too. Hong and Chang are soundly defeated in the tournament. However, the tournament is regarded as the championship between Hong Kong and Thailand. Thus martial art leaders in Hong Kong are angry at them and blame Lau. While His daughter, Siu Fung's fiance takes back his engagement ring and the students leave him, Lau commits suicide. In order to clear up their father's reputation, Siu Fung and Hong decide to go to Bangkok to learn Thai boxing, hoping that they can win the Thai boxer. They devote themselves into learning it, trying to mix the two schools of martial arts well together. A friendly match is arranged between Hong and a famous Thai boxer Nai Sarath. When they get a draw, the host asks for a rematch. Siu Fung picks up the challenge and fights against the best Thai boxer. Finally, she beats him.
