少女惠花（陳德容）及秀姑（劉小慧）自小一起長大，情同姊妹。惠花因對鄉中的童婚制度及異性產生恐懼，不自覺將自己的感情傾注在秀姑身上。二人在媽祖廟內結為姐妹夫妻，互換手鐲為盟。秀以為是鬧著玩，花卻一心想與秀長相廝守。秀出嫁，花對秀的戀慕更為沉迷，秀漸感不安。花被逼下嫁富戶大雄後，竟向丈夫提出離婚，逃回母家。而秀自婚後已逐漸適應婚姻生活，對丈夫阿光（郭晉安）產生情愫，表現日趨親暱。光申請外調特區工作獲准，擬偕秀同行；花竟欲刺死秀然後自殺，下手之際忽聞秀已有身孕，花竟決定……
