Aired in 2007, PTS historical drama The War of Betrayal 1895 is an epic look at a crucial turning point in Taiwan history. Centered around the year 1895, the year Japan invaded Taiwan, the drama closely follows the tumultuous changes of that period. From 1894, when Japan formally launched war against Qing Dynasty China to the Japanese colonization of Taiwan in the war's aftermath, the Sino-Japanese War forever changed the fate of the small island at the edge of the Chinese empire. The War of Betrayal 1895 emphasizes the revolutionary activities of Taiwan independence fighters, both during Qing rule and in the early colonial years. The series is helmed by film director Wan Jen (Connection by Fate, The Taste of Apples) with an impressive ensemble cast that includes acclaimed actor Fan Zhi Wei (Crystal Boys, The Best of Times), Wen Sheng Hao (Dangerous Mind), Josephine Hsu (The Hospital), Long Tian Xiang, and Tang Zhi Wei.

1894年，日本於甲午戰爭中擊敗積弱的清帝國，兩國簽訂「馬關條約」，從此以後，影響台灣人民命運至鉅……。

甲午戰前，由於在台灣的清朝官僚體系官員全由中國內地派來，心態自大、貪婪，加上輿論由少數士紳富豪控制，他們與官僚組成上層統治階層。日本政權的替換，無疑將剝奪這些階級的特權與利益。

戰後，官員與士紳成立「台灣民主國」抗日，但缺乏真正民主與民眾支持，年號「永清」與國旗上的黃虎圖騰，即被視為臣服清帝國的象徵。其實，唐景崧、邱逢甲（湯志偉飾）沒有抗日建國決心，他們與清廷一樣，盼望歐美列強援助。俄德法三國強迫日本歸還遼東半島，給他們極大的鼓勵。

而日軍登陸至佔領民主國首都台北，不過十日；但從台北攻到台南，卻長達近半年。蓋因自桃竹苗以下（台南例外）對鄉土抱著強烈情感，佃農壯丁自組義民軍，以鋤頭、鎌刀、竹茅、刀劍為武器，採游擊戰術，讓日軍疲於奔命。這段義民軍抗日的史實與台灣民主國成立與崩潰，是彼時歷史背景，也是「亂世豪門」戲劇情節的主軸。
