One of the Shaw Brothers' signature filmmakers during the 1960s and 70s, Ho Meng Hua directed many of the famed studio's greatest works such as the Monkey Goes West series and cult classic The Flying Guillotine. From graceful wuxia to bloody action to stirring drama, Ho built up a remarkably varied filmography over 30 something years of filmmaking. His 1964 period film The Warlord and the Actress, featuring a screenplay by Chang Cheh, is set during the early years of the republic when China was racked by revolution and warlordism. Revolving around a young singer's heroic struggle against a warlord, the film features the all-star cast of Lan Di, Chin Han, and Yeh Feng from Our Sister Hedy and Sun, Moon and Star. The Warlord and the Actress received an Honorable Mention for Drama at the 1965 Golden Horse Awards.

A member of the Red Peony troupe, singer Tang Pei Hua (Yeh Feng) is renowned for her beautiful voice and appearances. Her beauty, however, invites the unwanted attentions of cruel and lecherous warlord Cao Lin (Zeng Mei). In order to escape Cao's grasp, Tang and her lover Lin Ke Qiang (Chin Han) decide to run away to the south where they can live freely. But their plan is uncovered by Cao, and Lin gets captured. In order to save Lin, Tang must sacrifice herself and entertain Japanese guests at a banquet, throwing herself into danger's way.

Even fans of the great director Chang Cheh may not know that he was also the Shaw Studio's chief scriptwriter from 1962 to 1967. Here he penned a Golden Horse Award-winning romantic adventure set in the early days of the Chinese Republic, when the North was overrun by a despot who collaborates with the Japanese. There, the cabaret singer known as Red Peony loves a patriotic college student, but the tyrant lusts after her. This classic triangle sets the stage for torment, deception, action, intrigue, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph.
