YesAsia Editorial Description
Director Chang Cheh's 1972 epic, The Water Margin, is the first film by the famed director to adapt the classic Shi Naian novel also titled The Water Margin (or The Outlaws of the Marsh). Widely considered one of the greatest novels in Chinese history, The Water Margin portrayed a classic tale of 108 outlaw heroes who rose up for the common people against injustice and tyranny.
Chang Cheh's film version of The Water Margin adapts a few chapters of the sprawling work, and concentrates on the clash between the famous heroes and Sung Dynasty traitors on Liang Shan mountain. Exquisite action choreography from legendary action director Lau Kar Leung, peerless Shaw Brothers sets and costumes, and an impressive cast of thousands adds to Chang Cheh's superlative work. The Water Margin is one of the definitive heroic bloodshed films of the Shaw Brothers library, and features many popular stars of the era, including Di Lung, David Chiang, Chan Koon Tai, Ngok Wah, and Lily Ho. Followed by the 1973 film All Men are Brothers.

The Chang Cheh directed The Water Margin the martial art epic of epics… of epics. Based on the true legend of how 108 rebel heroes living in the mountain were able to repeatedly defeat invading Sung armies, the film starred just about anyone who was a name at Shaw Brothers at the time, like David Chiang, Chen Kauan-tai and Ti Lung. Overstuffed and overlong
|
"The Water Margin" starts with a long, tedious opening sequence; five minutes wasted on long range shots of ships coming to shore, troops emerging from them, then lots of marching around by the troops. This is followed by a long scene at an inn in which the overstuffed cast toasts each other. When we finally get a fight scene, the fight choreography is laughable. David Chiang does lots of tumbling, then, when he barely touches two much larger men, they go flying. Fortunately, the movie gets better in the middle segments, but, with such a large cast and so much story to tell, director Chang Cheh clearly had trouble maintaining the film's narrative drive and focus. Ultimately, "The Water Margin" seems to run much longer than its actual two-hour running time. Here's the central problem with this film: The story is plucked from the middle of a very long, very complicated novel. Yet the movie makes little attempt to give the viewer a sense of the larger context in which this story occurs and, by featuring such a large cast, gives the viewer very little reason to care about any of the characters. The filmmakers should have provided more context and simplified the story line, thus allowing for greater character development. Perhaps this would have been less true to the novelistic source, but it would have made for a better movie. I have to mention the awful soundtrack music. When they are not stealing riffs from bad spaghetti Westerns, they are dredging up overly loud licks from dreadful early 1970s-style hard rock. It is jarringly misplaced. |

Not Bad
| The intro is fantastic,as well are the actors, costumes and story...but entirley not enough Lily Ho for me.Her battle at the end of ther film is rather nice, but too short.I just wish she had more screen time, even this is chapters 64-67 taken from a novel. |

top t.v from the 70's
| I love this series, I was only a child when this appeared on terrestrial t.v, all the swordplay and fighting was so exciting to me then and the storyline stayed with me.The theme tune also stayed with me and I hunned it alot through the years, when I saw it was available on video I immediately bought both series and was as entranced as I had been when a child, I have both series on dvd now and have to say it is one of my alltime favourite shows, I recommend it to anyone. |

Faithful adaptation of Chinese classic
|
I bought this dvd because one of my favourite actresses Lily Ho is in it. But her role is a minor one. Just one or two speaking lines. But she shines in her fighting scenes as the formidable Lady Hu. This movie is an adaptation of Chapters 64-68 of the massive book "The Water Margin". The plot flows along nicely and director Chang Cheuh pours on the bloodshed wherever necessary. Of all the actors here, David Chiang shines as his character is one of the most central ones. Veteran actor Chin Feng is also good as the brains behind the Liang Shan bandits. But Danny Lee is reduced to a cameo and Ti Lung's Wu Sung character is underdeveloped.Hopefully he will come into his own in the sequel. |
