Released in 1970, Shaw Brothers period actioner The Winged Tiger is the underrated Chen Hung Lieh's (Come Drink With Me) first film as a leading actor. One of Hong Kong cinema's most famous villains during the 1960s and 1970s, Chen played the hero for once in The Winged Tiger. Co-starring Yu Qian and Tian Feng, the film is directed by Chiang Shen, whose works include Swordswomen Three, Lady of the Law, and Call to Arms.

Chen Hung Lieh stars as the titular "Winged Tiger", the handle of Water Margin hero Lei Heng. One of the four great classics in Chinese literature, Water Margin is the defining tome of chivalry and heroics, and appropriately enough, the Shaw Brothers offered many adaptations of the text, from Chang Cheh's epic 1972 film to Cheng Gang's Pursuit. The Winged Tiger focuses especially on Lei, one of the 108 storied outlaws of the marsh who sealed their brotherhood at Mount Liang during the mid-Song Dynasty. A blacksmith by trade, Lei Hung is a tall and lumbering warrior known for his great strength. His ability to leap some twenty feet in one bound earned him the moniker of Winged Tiger.
