YesAsia Editorial Description

The World is the first government-sanctioned feature by China's 6th Generation director Jia Zhang-ke, whose previous underground works such as Platform and Unknown Pleasures have been widely acclaimed among film critics and movie lovers alike. The film title The World actually refers to the Window of the World amusement park in Beijing. While the park promotes itself as a place for you to travel around the world without stepping out of Beijing, the film revolves around some migrant workers' helplessness of failing to escape from this park to enjoy the freedom in the outside world. Far more dramatic than his previous works, The World is no less critical of social issues and Jia Zhang-ke continues to show his humanitarian concerns in a film replete with animated sequences and extravagant pageantry.

Lovely Zhao Tao, also stars in Unknown Pleasure, becomes Jia Zhang-ke's muse once again. She plays a dancer Xiao Tao in the amusement park who walks around Indian palace, Eiffel Tower, Egyptian pyramids, prosperous Manhattan... and her boyfriend is the chief guard protecting The World. While their seemingly fabulous lives are indeed routine and mundane, Xiao Tao receives a phone call from his ex-boyfriend who is departing for Ulan Bator, a symbol of the outside world in the film…

The World captured the prizes for Best Feature Film and Best Cinematography at the Sixth Las Palmas International Film Festival in Spain and the Grand Prix du Jury at the 11th Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema in France. It was also chosen as the closing film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2005.

Belated response.... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Though I've seen the film twice in the theatre it's hard to recall exactly what has been edited out since it's not a narrative driven story. It just seems when it was released in China they edited it to pack in more theatrical screenings per day.

The full length Region 1 DVD will be released on February 16, 2006 by Zeitgeist. And after comparing the lengths it's more like 35-40 minutes was edited out of the Chinese version. It's worth buying both though to compare--in the chinese version there's an obvious reference to Hou Hsiao Hsien's film "Boys From Fengkuei."

DVD Info for Buyers Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is the first version of this film to appear on DVD and it may be a while before others do. I was heartened to discover that it does in fact have English subtitles (burned in) along with simplified Chinese. They are not the easiest to read but they are there!
The DVD is also NTSC All Code not PAL format so it should play on Region 1 machines.
My disappointment stems from the fact that this is the Chinese released version which is about 20 minutes shorter than what's playing on the festival circuit. But the film is so good it's still worth owing!
