In between the acting and fighting, Shaw Brothers superstar David Chiang also found time to dabble in directing during the 1970s and 80s. His works covered a surprising range including gangster drama Silent Love, supernatural comedy Double Fattiness, action classic The One Armed Swordsmen, and the 1987 romantic comedy The Wrong Couples. John Sham served as producer for the film, while his mustachioed Pom Pom co-star, Richard Ng, took the leading role again, having previously starred in Chiang's Heaven Can Wait. Chiang's older brother Paul Chun and wife Lee Lam Lam both appear in the film. Shining the brightest though is iconic actress Josephine Siao, who won the Best Actress trophy at the 1988 Hong Kong Film Awards for her charming performance in The Wrong Couples.

Finally returning home after a long time at sea, Yu (Richard Ng) is greeted with a rather unpleasant surprise. His wife has left, and his apartment has a new tenant, May Wong (Josephine Siu). Forced to live together, May and Yu, both of whom have rather strange habits, bicker day in and day out over every little thing, but slowly come to understand each other. In order to get his daughter's custody rights, Yu decides to give up sailing and become a full-time inventor. May tries to help out, but her unscrupulous friend (Paul Chun) steals the invention. With his plans ruined, Yu must face the prospect of losing both his daughter and May.

余大地(吳耀漢飾)行船回港，發覺妻子已離他而去，連他的祖屋也改租了給黃梅(蕭芳芳飾)。黃梅被逼與余大地共處一屋，二人各有怪僻，成為鬥氣冤家。余大地要向前妻取回八歲女兒心儀的撫養權，決定不再行船。由於他有發明新產品的天份，所以以此為職業。黃梅漸明白余大地之處境，決定助他爭女兒。黃梅的生意合伙人牟福利(秦沛飾)假意助余，將其發明品據為己有。余因此官司失敗，失去女兒撫養權。黃梅向余大地表示愛意，惜他已準備再做船員，上船前他叫黃梅等他回來。余大地在泰國準備回港，卻作弄黃梅說他要隨船到中東。怎知那艘船在中東沉沒，眾人以為他死了，女兒聞訊就離家出走去找他，而他卻回到香港......

Upon returning home, sailor Yu (Richard Ng) is shock to discover that not only his wife left him, but the house has also subleted to an old maid May Wong (Josephine Siu). Both Yu and Wong have their own strange habits, and they live together under the same roof causes numerous hilarious incidents. Yu determines to quit sailing and fights for the custody of his eight years old daughter Sum Yee. He also decides to turn to be inventor. May Wong gradually sympathizes him and assists him in the fight. But Yu's business partner Mao (Paul Chaing) who pretends to help Yu, but in fact steals all of Yu's inventions. Owing to that, Yu loses the custody. May, at this moment, expresses her love to Yu. But Yu has decided to go on board again, and bids May to wait for him. Yu is now in Thailand and ready to set sail back Hong Kong. But he plays a prank on May, calling to tell her that he's sailing for Middle East. It just happens that the ship sailing for Middle East is sunk. And everybody thinks Yu is dead. Unknowing the damage he has done, Yu returns Hong Kong......
