One of the most private of Ozu's films, "There Was A Father" is resemblance of his early work, "The Only Son". An aging father, who has been a good teacher all his life, has to leave his son to work in Tokyo, due to an accident that happened in his school. His son grew up to follow his footsteps and become a teacher, but all he wants is to live with his father again. When the son finally has a chance to live with his age-old father, his father falls critically ill. Replacing the playful and demonstrative affection between father and son in the "Kihachi" series, this film observes silently the moments when emotions are unconsciously in unison, and is all the more touching.

Ozu film about fatherhood Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The primary subject matter of "There Was a Man" is never directly addressed, it is only suggested in this subtle Ozu Yasujiro film. Ryu Chishu stars as a teacher who walks away from his career after two of his students drown during a school outing. The teacher feels responsible for their deaths and feels that he no longer deserves the honor of being a teacher.

This leads him into a series of jobs that separate him from his son. The teacher is a single parent and the child ends up living far from his father, able to see him only on holidays. When the son reaches adulthood, he becomes a college professor. However, he yearns to leave his job and move to Tokyo so he finally may have an opportunity to live with his father. His father, however, scolds him and urges him to devote himself fully to his job. Finally, the son agrees to marry the daughter of his father's friend. The son hopes that his father will agree now to move in with him, but fate steps in and brings a different result.

In its indirect way, the subject of this rather slow-moving film is whether Ryu Chishu's character actually is a good father. Put another way, the film is a meditation on what makes a father a good father. I suspect that most viewers may grow impatient with the pace of this movie, but Ozu fans definitely will want to see it.
