Among the many Chinese titles about the Sino-Japanese War, Three Girls has more rights to claim the most classical film than others. Director Chen Li Ting, a famous film and drama director who started his career in 1930s, made Three Girls in 1949 when the Chinese Communist Party has just won the civil war. The film revolves around three Chinese women's lives in a Japanese-occupied area during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-45). They still have hope for a better future despite all their pains, and each has a unique story anchored in historical turbulence.

Xinqun, a female patriot, joins the underground army to fight for her nation. Ruoying have thought of joining her patriotic ex-husband in the battlefield, but she finds it hard to leave her rich husband who is a traitor. Jinzhu attempts suicide for she cannot stands her humiliating life, but luckily a passer-by saves her life. Her experience inspires Ruoying, and Xinqun helps the two to start their new lives...

This film reflects the people's pain, hope, living, and battle in the battlefield through Li Xinqun, Jin Zhu, Liang Ruoying and they three different sufferings and different roads they go across. Li Xinqun is young patriot, and she joins in underground anti-Japan movement, struggles with the traitor and traitorous act bravely; Liang Ruoying reunites with her former husband ZhangYuliang who also joined anti-Japan, but she did not would like to leave her after husband Wang Zhongyuan who is traitor because of greed for material. Maid JinZhu has no choice but to sold herself after insulted by Japanese military and dismissed by factory, she couldn't bear the heave load of living, and thrown herself into the river to committed suicide. But rescued by others. Ruoying who had lost faint in living was educated by seeing the JinZhu's suffering. With Xinqun's help, Ruoying and Jinzhu had strong wills.
