　　十九世紀中葉，兩個交情很深的家族閔家和竺家，一起下南洋做苦工，並在一次瘟疫中先後死去。他們的兩個兒子閔壽楠和竺自臻，拿著父輩掙下的血汗錢，在昆明合夥開了一家老滇貨棧。
　　由於閔壽楠與竺自臻所熱衷的經營思路不同，終歸分道揚鑣。閔壽楠繼續以傳統的思路開著貨棧，竺自臻則遠渡重洋，有成而歸，以開闊的思路，在創建了專營洋貨的南洋貨棧。
　　閔、竺兩家，圍繞傳統與圖新，不停地進行暗中較量；同時，由於遺留著當初創建貨棧時，竺家入股的100兩黃金長期沒有的到結算，導致閔家為了保住貨棧，不得不屈從於竺家提出兒女換親姻緣。
　　就這樣，兩家在經歷著“馬加里事件”、“中法戰爭”等重大歷史時期的同時，也釀下了難解的恩恩怨怨。
　　可以說本片是以兩家人的情感糾葛來展示當時社會底層人民的心態，而又同時影射出了大多數民眾渴望變革和進步的急切心理。通過兩家人在改革方面的積極和抵觸，來反映當時廣大民眾對生活現狀的矛盾心態。
