Lyrical film from Ichikawa Jun Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Tokyo Lullaby" is a lovely, quiet tone poem of a film. Set in an out-of-the-way neighborhood of shopkeepers in Tokyo, the film tells of the return of a man named Hamanaka to the neighborhood after an absence of many years and of all of the ripples in the neighborhood caused by Hamanaka's return.

The film's story (to the extent "Tokyo Lullaby" can be said to have a story) is unveiled slowly and almost inadvertently through overheard conversations and subtle changes in expressions. We learn that Hamanaka and Tami had been in love, that Tami married another man for whom she felt sorry, but for whom she was ill-suited. We learn that Hamanaka married Hisako, then left town because he still was in love with Tami and couldn't bear his situation. Through the intervening years, Tami's husband had died, but she remained in the neighborhood, working at his parents' cafe. Hisako remained living with Hamanaka's parents. And now Hamanaka's return is upsetting the stasis into which their lives had fallen.

Again, I need to emphasize the glancing, indirect approach to storytelling in this film. We don't learn most of these facts until we are more than halfway through the film's running length. Primarily, this film is an ode to the daily rhythms of this quiet neighborhood and to the profound, yet subtle, disturbance caused by Hamanaka's return.

This film is not for everyone; many viewers may joke of "Tokyo Lullaby" that it put them to sleep. However, patient viewers willing to let themselves become immersed within the soothing, lyrical qualities of this contemplative film will be amply rewarded. Very recommended for fans of arthouse movies.
