Director Jun Ichikawa delivers Tokyo Marigold, an understated, atmospheric drama starring the enchanting Rena Tanaka. Eriko (Rena Tanaka) is a lonely young woman in Tokyo who takes an opportunity to spice up her life by proffering a deal to a shy young salaryman named Tamura (Osawa Masayoshi). Though Tamura has a girlfriend studying abroad for one year, Eriko offers to be his live-in love until the return of his true girlfriend. He agrees, but the arrangement takes Eriko on a journey she neither anticipated nor truly wanted. Life takes on new beauty and joy for Eriko, but the predetermined end of her love is like that of the French Marigold - after one year it will wither and die, leaving nothing. But Eriko is a living, feeling girl, and as much as she doesn't want it, her one-year love changes her irretrievably.

Full of evocative urban locations and subtle observations on modern Tokyo life, Tokyo Marigold is an entertaining and affecting drama that convinces in its complete and realistic portrait of a girl who steps out of her shell to make a choice that forever changes her inside.
