The sixteenth instalment in the Tora-san series. The seventeen-year-old girl Junko (Sakurada Junko) comes to Tora-san"s house, claiming that Tora-san is her father! Fortunately, Tora-san arrives home and explains everything. Junko has mistaken him as her father because he has always sent money to Junko"s mother, thanking her for her hospitality when he was very desperate in Yamagata about ten years ago. When Junko tells him that her mother has passed away a year ago, he is crushed and determined to visit her mother"s grave... When Tora-san comes back, an archeology student Reiko (Kashiyama Fumie) comes to rent the place, and he takes this opportunity to pursue learning, and love. However, her teacher Keiji is also there, which makes it difficult for Tora-san.

Tora's deep thoughts Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Tora-San, The Intellect" begins with a surprising misunderstanding: A pretty young high school student (Sakurada Junko) shows up at the Toraya sweet shop referring to Tora (Atsumi Kiyoshi) as her father. Tora's family is stunned; has Tora been concealing a love-child from them?

As it turns out, no, he hasn't. The girl's mother was kind to Tora 17 years earlier, when he was down on his luck. Over the years, Tora has sent letters of gratitude to the mother, each time enclosing a little money to help pay the educational expenses of the woman's daughter. The girl, not knowing who her real father was, simply assumed that her father must be this nice man who sent the letters to her mother. She has arrived at Toraya to tell Tora that her mother has passed away.

Tora then journeys to the woman's hometown to pay his respects at her grave. There he meets a priest, who counsels Tora to seek education through self-knowledge. Tora takes this advice very seriously and returns to Tokyo thinking deep thoughts (or, at least, trying to think deep thoughts). To convince people that he has turned over a new leaf and become a thoughtful person committed to learning, he begins wearing a pair of glasses (that he doesn't need) and carrying around a couple books (that he doesn't read). Tora's grasping for intellectual gravitas provides some of the funniest moments in the entire Tora-san series.

A new boarder is living at Toraya, a beautiful archeology grad student named Reiko (Kashiyama Fumie). She agrees to tutor Tora in history so he may deepen his understanding of life. You can guess how successful are these tutoring sessions, although Tora loves being able to spend time in Reiko's company. Also having strong feelings for Reiko is her 50ish professor (Kobayashi Keiju), who, after receiving counseling from Tora, sends an impassioned letter to her.

Will Reiko choose as her suitor Tora, her professor, or none of the above? Watch this richly enjoyable 16th entry in director Yamada Yoji's Tora-San series to find out. I recommend it very highly.
