Director: Yamada Yoji

The 31st instalment in the Tora-san series. On a ship en route to the Sado Islands, Tora-san enjoys the company of a beautiful woman (Miyako Harumi), unaware that she's a famous enka singer traveling incognito. In this variation on Roman Holiday (1953), the enka star enjoys Tora-san's company when her boyfriend left her. Eventually, she returns to her glamorous life, but not before surprising everyone in Shibamata by showing up to give Tora-san a ticket to her latest concert. Tora-san thought that this could be a good start, but she finally tells him that… her boyfriend is back. This movie features many enka stars (including Miyako herself) and longtime character actresses Tanie Kitabayashi and Chieko Nakakita, because director Yamada Yoji is also a big fan of Miyako.

Tora + Enka = Entertainment Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Tora-San's Song of Love", the 31st film in this series, draws upon director Yamada Yoji's fondness for enka music in general and the singing of Miyako Harumi in particular. As an enka fan myself, I particularly enjoyed this film.

Tora returns from the road to find that nephew Mitsuo's annual school athletic meet is the following day; Mitsuo's father is unable to attend due to business obligations. Tora volunteers to go and to root enthusiastically for Mitsuo. Mitsuo is horrified that his uncle will embarrass him in front of his schoolmates. Tora's family discourages Tora from attending. Tora, deeply wounded, returns to the road.

In a remote town, as Tora is about to embark to Sado Island, he encounters a mysterious solitary woman. She decides to accompany Tora to the island. They stay at the same inn, dine and drink together, tour the island together. As you might expect, Tora becomes smitten with her. The woman turns out to be the famous enka singer Kyo Harumi (played by the famous enka singer Miyako Harumi), who is fleeing the burdens of her fame that are compounded by the melancholy she feels after breaking up with her longtime boyfriend.

Can Tora find true love with the popular songstress? You'll find lots of warm-hearted comedy and great songs along the way as you await the answer to that question. I recommend "Tora-San's Song of Love" highly. (I note that Columbia Records has just issued a "Golden Best" collection of Miyako Harumi's songs, available from YesAsia.)
