YesAsia Editorial Description

Real-life brothers Keita Shota and Keita Saito team up to portray baseball playing twin brothers in the winning live action film adaptation of Mitsuru Adachi's popular 1980s era manga, Touch! Directed by Inudo Isshin, this seishun eiga ("youth film") centers on a love triangle set amidst the competitive world of high school baseball. Keita Saito plays Kazuya, a star baseball pitcher, while Keita Shota portrays "little" brother Tatsuya, an up-and-coming boxer at the amateur level. Both boys just so happen to be in love with Asakura Minami who is played by Nagasawa Masami, best known for her star-making turn in Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World. Minami is not only the baseball club's manager, but the twins' closest childhood friend as well.

Deciding between the two brothers in regard to romance, however, is one choice Minami doesn't have to make thanks to a tragic twist of fate that cuts short Kazuya's life. This unexpected tragedy compels Tatsuya to step in for Kazuya on the pitcher's mound in the hopes of achieving his brother's long held dream to play in the National High School Baseball Tournament at Koshien Stadium in Hyogo Prefecture. Meanwhile, Minami has dreams of her own, as she works hard to take the top prize at the All Japanese Gymnastic Tournament. As Tatsuya and Minami come to support one another, the two of them find themselves falling in love, but somehow Tatsuya can't bring himself to express what lies within his heart. Will he overcome his feelings of guilt over his brother and tell Minami how he feels? He'll have to, if he's going to achieve both Kazuya's dreams and his own!

Tatsuya and Kazuya the twin brothers, have a mutual girl friend, Minami, who has been their playmate since they were babies. After they enter the same high school, Minami harbors a dream: To participate in the national high school baseball championship tournament at Koshien Stadium. In order to materialize it, Kazuya joins the baseball team of Meisei High School as an ace pitcher. He proves that he is talented as an athlete and as a student. He is considered a perfect match for Minami whose beauty and brightness win her the unanimous adoration of the high school students.

Meanwhile, Tatsuya is sloppy and, with poor academic records, far from the center of attraction. Evidently inferior to his twin brother, however, love has found its place in his heart, and his affection for Minami grows day by day. Though she feels Kazuya's attachment, Minami is rather attracted to Tatsuya than to Kazuya. As time goes by, it is Tatsuya who wins her first kiss.

The preliminary heats for the championship tournament begin, and the Meisei High School team wins game after game to the final, thanks to Kazuya's nice pitching. But in the morning on the day of the final, Kazuya gets involved in a traffic accident and dies. His ardent wish to take Minami to Koshien Stadium becomes Tatsuya's, who joins the baseball team as a pitcher just like Kazuya. But with little experiences as a baseball player, Tatsuya has to endure many hardships to play the part of his twin brother. Nevertheless, he is determined to get through the trial heats and go to Koshien for the championship tournament with his love...

Professional Review of "Touch (Hong Kong Version)"

April 1, 2006

This professional review refers to Touch (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
Adachi Mitsuru's popular manga, Touch, finally gets the big screen treatment in Inudo Isshin's arresting live action update. Serialized in the weekly manga magazine Shonen Sunday from 1981 to 1986, the original comic proved so popular that it was later adapted into a 101-episode long anime series, three theatrical anime films, two anime specials for TV, and a live action TV drama special. With all these adaptations, clearly, the story must have something going for it. And if the cinematic version of Touch is any indication, there's plenty to enjoy.

Although it condenses the long-running storyline to a comparatively truncated 116-minute running time, this particular seishun eiga ("youth film") delivers a cohesive storyline with surprisingly well developed characters, all in all making for a thoroughly satisfying movie. The film centers on Uesugi Kazuya and Uesugi Tatsuya, twin brothers who've been next door neighbors to Asakura Minami since all of them were little babies. In fact, the three of them are so close that their parents even built a playhouse between the two homes so they could hang out together. Even from an early age, the three pals have loved baseball, a love that impels the boys to promise to take Minami to the baseball championships one day at Koshien Stadium in the Hyogo Prefecture.

The film then picks up during the trio's high school years, as they have remained as close as ever, although the brothers have gone their separate ways when it comes to the subject of baseball. While the studious Kazuya (Saito Keita) is an all-star baseball pitcher, the equally talented Tatsuya (Saito Shota) has evolved into somewhat of a slacker, choosing to quit the baseball team in order to pursue an interest in amateur boxing. Although Minami (Nagasawa Masami) serves as manager for the baseball team, faithfully cheering Kazuya to victory, it's to Tatsuya that her heart truly belongs. However, over the years, Kazuya has developed feelings for Minami as well, a fact that inevitably looks to break up the harmony of their childhood friendship.

As fate would have it, Minami never gets the chance to choose between the two brothers thanks to an unexpected tragedy that ends Kazuya's life. After much consideration, Tatsuya is compelled to pick up where his brother left off and help lead the team to the National High School Baseball Tournament in Koshien, not only to honor both his brother's dream, but to make good on the promise he made to Minami all those years ago. However, his decision draws the ire of his mother as well as Kazuya's mostly skeptical teammates. It won't be easy to win them over though, as Tatsuya's baseball skills are a little rusty and his crucial relationship with Minami is at an emotional standstill. By the film's end, it's no longer just a question of whether Tatsuya can win the big game, but whether he still has a shot at winning back Minami's heart.

What unfolds isn't exactly unexpected for anyone who's ever seen a sports movie in their life, but somehow, the filmmakers are able to make both the film's outcome and the journey that preceded it seem fresh and exciting. Saito Shota makes for a fine everyman hero, and the film surrounds him with likeable supporting characters who help bring the story to life, including a secondary love interest for Tatsuya, a tough-talking boxer buddy from school, Kazuya's loyal, but disapproving catcher, and a rival baseball player who approaches pitchers as if he's a master swordsman looking to lock blades with an equally-skilled opponent. Although it's likely that all these characters had more depth in the original manga, their very presence in the narrative is certainly a welcome one.

But what really elevates the film beyond the level of mere teen drama or sports flick is its star actress, Nagasawa Masami. Best known for her fantastic performance in the hit film Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World, Nagasawa's acting here proves to be no less revelatory. With even the simplest of glances or gestures, she brings a youthful energy, endearing sincerity, and naturalistic charm to her character, making even the most clichéd of sequences seem somehow fresh, joyful, and remarkably poignant. Whatever your opinion of baseball, Touch amounts to a fine sports/teen movie hybrid, perhaps most notable as a showcase for the undeniable acting talents of its remarkable leading lady.

Good sports drama Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The Saito brothers and Nagasawa Masami deliver solid performances in this effective baseball-themed melodrama.

The brothers and Miss Nagasawa are life-long next-door neighbors and best friends who grow up loving baseball. As small children they vow to go to the high school championships together, but realize that since Miss Nagasawa will not be able to compete, it will be up to the boys to get the job done. One of the brothers becomes an ace pitcher; the other drifts away from baseball and other commitments. The ace pitcher is killed while saving a toddler from being hit by a truck; the other brother now must step up and fill the ace's shoes. Can he pull it off?

"Touch" is at its best when it is not trying too hard; it tends to become overearnest in the big dramatic moments. However, the film's big climax is handled well and its warm depiction of the youngsters' family and school lives makes the viewer care about these very sympathetic characters.

"Touch" may not be a home run (let's call it a solid double), but is worth watching and proves to be yet another nice addition to Miss Nagasawa's impressive body of work.
