YesAsia Editorial Description

Decisions might take a moment, but often their consequences can last a lifetime. Hours away from the moment that would change his life forever, attorney Hyun Woo (Yoo Ji Tae of Oldboy and Antarctic Journal) calls his girlfriend Min Joo (Kim Ji Soo of Romance and This Charming Girl), telling her to wait for him at the coffee shop inside the mall, as he had work to finish. The two had just chosen the apartment they would live in, and were preparing their wedding. But on that day, June 29th, 1995, Min Joo became a victim of one of the darkest moments in Korea during the mid-90s: the collapse of a mall which killed over 500 people and injured close to a thousand. Ten years later and still affected by this tragic loss, Hyun Woo receives a package containing a diary Min Joo wrote ten years earlier. He starts visiting all the places described in the diary, his memories re-emerging like an old wound one tries to forget about but can't erase. And when young Se Jin (Uhm Ji Won of Tale of Cinema and Running Wild) appears mysteriously at more than one of those places, confusion enters Hyun Woo's mind.

Presented at the 11th Pusan International Film Festival, director Kim Dae Seung's Traces of Love is once again an eclectic proof of how much Kim likes to subvert genre conventions. After working as an assistant director for some of the biggest names in the industry (Im Kwon Taek, Jung Ji Young) in masterpieces like White Badge, Sopyonje and The Taebaek Mountains, Kim debuted with a strange melting pot of genre conventions and new vibes, Bungee Jumping of Their Own. Starring Lee Byung Hun and the late Lee Eun Ju, the film mixed simple melodrama conventions with a touch of homosexuality, fantasy and more. His second film was even more surprising: an expertly directed historical drama mixed with thriller tropes, Blood Rain. Now back with his third film, Kim plays with time in the same ways which made Ditto and Il Mare hits a few years ago, employing the talent of Yoo Ji Tae, who's slowly finding his own voice as an actor, and the ever talented Kim Ji Soo.

Professional Review of "Traces Of Love (DVD) (Director's Cut Edition) (Japan Version)"

February 26, 2007

This professional review refers to Traces of Love Director's Cut Limited Edition DTS
Traces of Love is the latest work from Kim Dae Seung, arguably one of the more interesting directors working in modern Korean cinema, who was previously responsible for the unconventional Bungee Jumping of Their Own and the gritty thriller Blood Rain. With this his third film, he again takes a rather generic form, that of the chronologically shifting love story, recently popularised in the likes of Ditto and Il Mare, and transforms it into something far more rewarding, exploring loss and the hope of rebirth in a poetic and engrossing fashion which eschews the obvious tugs at viewers' heart strings upon which similar efforts have been so reliant.

The film begins in 1995 with newly qualified attorney Hyun Woo (popular actor Yoo Ji Tae, best known for his role in Park Chan-wook's classic Oldboy) and his fiance Min Joo (Kim Ji Soo, also in Romance and This Charming Girl) happily in love and about to move into their first apartment together. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes as Min Joo is caught up in the horrific collapse of a shopping mall (a real life incident which claimed the lives of over five hundred people and injured more than a thousand), leaving Hyun Woo alone and lost in the world. Ten years later, he is still unable to get on with his life when he receives a package containing a travel diary written by his lost love which describes a series of places she had hoped they would visit together. After trouble at his work leads to an enforced holiday, he decides to follow the path laid out in the book, only to repeatedly encounter Se Jin (actress Uhm Ji Won of Tale of Cinema and Running Wild), a strange young woman who seems to have a connection with Min Joo.

Although the plot may sound like a recipe for the kind of bittersweet tear jerker so often favoured by Korean directors, Traces of Love is actually a far more complicated and subtle film. Taking a national tragedy and drawing from it a very intimate and personal story, Kim focuses on themes of acceptance and closure rather than romance, and thankfully avoids any of the emotional cheap shots which might have been expected, with very little of the running time being devoted to the usual angst-wallowing, and with shots of characters staring mournfully into the rain kept mercifully to a minimum. The film is quietly poignant without ever being too sentimental, and this makes the proceedings feel both natural and believable, and as such it works well as a moving journey of healing and renewal. By working in themes of corruption and social injustice, Kim adds further dramatic depth in a way which complements the central tale and helps to keep things interesting by referencing the changes which time has wrought not only on the characters but the country as a whole.

Anchoring the film and providing it with a solid sympathetic core are the three central characters, all of whom are well written, with Kim dedicating most of the film to their gradual development. This does mean that the pace is fairly slow and meandering, though never dull and with a considerable emotional return during the later stages when secrets are revealed and life changing decisions are made. The acting is of a uniformly high standard, with Yoo Ji Tae in particular turning in a great performance as the tortured Hyun Woo, bringing to the role a touch of genuine sorrow whilst managing to avoid looking like a kicked puppy too much of the time.

Arguably the film's greatest strength is Kim's direction, which is excellent throughout, whether during the spectacular chaos of the accident and the sadness of its aftermath or the beautiful scenery of the characters' later journey. The influence of Korean master Im Kwon Taek (with whom he previously worked as an assistant director on the likes of Sopyonje and The Taebaek Mountains) is certainly apparent, and he shows the same kind of open, unhurried approach and similar use of symbolism, here involving the changing seasons in all their glory as a reflection of the never-ending cycle of life. This is nicely underscored by the way in which the film moves around chronologically, with Min Joo and Hyun Woo's past and present journeys unfolding in parallel.

This works far better than the awkward time travel gimmicks employed in the likes of Il Mare and allows the film to move towards a kind of spiritual convergence which is both satisfying and believable. Certainly, Traces of Love is a far more mature, thoughtful and indeed heartfelt effort than others of the genre, and one which should appeal to viewers who would normally steer clear of such overtly emotional dramas, being a technically accomplished and engaging film in its own right.

Journey of healing Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Outstanding and heart wrenching film that will leave you with greater appreciation of the present and the past. Director Dae seung Kim makes a masterpiece that is poignant and yet very uplifting. The story stems with the actual disaster in Korea in 1995 and it's emotional impact a decade later. This is not the usual Korean romance/disaster film with weepy and tear jerking sentimentality. Instead it is about taking journey of healing and acceptance with the deepest loss you may have in your life and moving on. By taking this journey, the film's protaganist finds his healing and a road to his future. It is a journey that is skillful accompanied by his lost love one that only Director Kim can pull off. Ji Tae Yoo is magnificent as a loss torn Protaganist Hyun Woo with Ji Soo Kim providing a wonderful performance as his lost love Min Joo, ever present in his journey of healing. Ji Won Uhm completes the picture as a young woman Se Jin as a bridge for Hyun woo to Min Joo from the past and in the present. Outstanding film and cannot wait for Director Kim's next film. Really an upcoming Korean Cinema Master.

Lost and Found Love Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I enjoyed director Kim Dae-seung's movie "Bungee Jumping of Their Own" and the theme of returned love through re-incarnation, but found this film a lot more credible of a similar situation where love can be regained.

Certainly this film is beautiful. The scenery, the music, the people and the intent are all heaven sent. Min-joo's poetic descriptions of the natural world, the communique she believes all human beings can have with the environment holds a key significance to the benefit of our own personal souls. That nature and humans do support each other, like the breath of trees are our oxygen. When Mon Joo described to Hyun-woo that the silent sound of rain in the sky needed to be heard on the ground, on the leaves of trees, umbrellas so that its beautiful sound can be understood is nature spoken in the human heart. Or when she describes how two people's hearts grow in love together, likened to a barren desert on the outset yet nurtured by experience, bringing a forest of love with maturity to those hearts - a metaphor she spoke as she envisioned her future marriage with Hyun-woo. These are small poetic things from this film, but so important in fully grasping the nature of the story. Although this poetry is what portends the tragedy that is to follow by the 'disaster' in this movie and the experiences of how Hyun-woo had to rediscover the loss of the beautiful woman he was about to marry.

This is a very rewarding movie if you look at the subtle parts and it certainly leaves its fragrance with you after it finishes. Director Kim Dae-seung has really tried to unlock something good here. Ji Tae performs well and it was nice to see him in this type of movie for a change. Ji-soo Kim (who plays Mon Joo) and Ji-won Uhm play their roles beautifully. Recommend this movie to those who love positive romantic movies. Also maybe to somebody who loved "The Lakehouse" (Keanu Reeves) but may have not tried an Asian movie before. (ie a pressy for somebody!)
