Based on a popular mystery novel by Shizuko Natsuki, the 1984 classic Tragedy of W stars Yakushimaru Hiroko, who made her mark in 1981's Sailor Suit and Machine Gun and became the queen of the Kadokawa idol films. Here, she plays young college student Shizuka who is given the opportunity to act in a stage play with professionals. Shizuka is willing to go to great lengths to master this role of a lifetime, but as the plot unfolds, she realizes that real life events are beginning to parallel events in the play.
One of the best films of the Kadokawa era, Tragedy of W (a.k.a W no Higeki) is not only a compelling mystery, but also a mesmerizing take on the struggles of women in a modernized society. Co-written by Arai Haruhiko (who later wrote Hiroki Ryuichi's award-winning Vibrator) and directed by Sawai Shinichiro (The Blue Wolf: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea), the film marks one of Hiroko Yakushimaru's most acclaimed performances, earning her the best actress prize at the Blue Ribbon Awards and another best actress nomination at the Japan Academy Awards. Sawai also who won the best director prize at the Japan Academy Awards for this film.

It's a hit for Hiroko!

In "The Tragedy of W", Hiroko Yakushimaru stars as a young actress who is passed over for a role in a stage play she covets, but then receives an opportunity to reclaim that role if she is willing to lie about the death of a wealthy patron of the stage play's lead actress. Will she sell her soul to gain her dream? If she does, what will be the consequences? These are the questions addressed by this excellent and entertaining movie. Miss Yakushimaru is perfect for her role. Although we normally associate her with a kind of wide-eyed, girlish innocence, here she plays a willful young woman who is willing to do just about anything to gain new experiences that she believes will help her in her craft. And, like some young actresses I have known, her character often is "giving a performance", even when not on stage. "The Tragedy of W" tells a believable, gripping story in a fast-moving, efficient style. I recommend it very highly. |
