The late, great Anita Mui teams with Happy Girls Troupe alumni Ann Bridgewater, Charine Chan, and Fennie Yuen in producer Raymond Wong's (All's Well Ends Well) Lunar New Year offering from 1987. Best remembered for her prolific musical career, Mui's legacy as a first-rate film comedienne in pictures like Drunken Master II is often overlooked. Her sharp comedic timing and undeniable screen presence help to elevate Trouble Couples above its formulaic plot, which concerns the efforts of Mui's three siblings to find their big sis a ready-made husband. The end results may be predictable, but the strong performances from Mui and company make Trouble Couples another winning Hong Kong comedy.
Having devoted her life to raising and providing for her three little sisters, the stern, no-nonsense Da Hsien (Mui) has little time left over for a boyfriend. She resigns herself to a life of spinsterhood, which doesn't sit well with her siblings, who are forbidden to marry before their eldest sister. Determined to find Da Hsien a husband - any husband - they dig up an emotional wreck on the rebound from a failed relationship (Eric Tsang, who also directed). Da Hsien's quick temper soon has the poor guy quaking in his boots, but the sisters aren't about to let him give up so easily.
