Kurosawa Akira's films have been remade many times before, but never quite like this. Producer Kadokawa Haruki and director Morita Yoshimitsu (Lost Paradise) revisit the 1962 samurai classic Sanjuro, working with the exact same script that Kikushima Ryuzo, Oguni Hideo, and Kurosawa wrote for the original. Though the dialogue and storyline are the same, the 2007 incarnation of Sanjuro is as revisionary as it is purist, none the least with the casting of affable Bayside Shakedown hero Oda Yuji as the title ronin. Oda is no Mifune Toshiro, and the film works largely because of that, updating the original for contemporary audiences. With Oda cutting a new kind of wily rogue swordsman, the 2007 Sanjuro brings out more of the flippant humor in the original script, keeping light pace between the sparring swords. The film's supporting cast brings together young stars like Suzuki Anne (Hana and Alice) and Matsuyama Kenichi (L: Change the World) with veterans like Fujita Makoto and Nishioka Tokuma.

One night, nine naive young samurai led by Isaka (Matsuyama Kenichi) gather at a shrine to discuss combating corruption in their clan. Suspecting Chief Retainer Mutsuta (Fujita Makoto) to be the culprit, they have arranged a meeting with Chief Inspector Kikui (Nishioka Tokuma). Out of nowhere, a gruff and unkempt ronin (Oda Yuji) jumps out and tells the indignant youth they not only have their facts reversed, they're now sitting ducks for Kikui's henchmen. Through casual wit and superior swordplay, the ronin, who introduces himself as Tsubaki Sanjuro, saves the young samurai's lives, and even gets himself a job offer from impressed chief henchman Muroto (Toyokawa Etushi). Sanjuro, however, decides to help the young samurai save Mutsuta who is being held captive by Kikui.
