Based on the Taiping Rebellion in Chinese history, TVB's Twilight of A Nation made in the 1980s follows the rise and fall of the Taiping Kingdom which existed for 13 years from 1843 to 1864. This TV epic stars Ray Lui, Felix Wong, Lau Ching Wan, Sheren Tang, Teresa Mo who have all earned great reputations in the TV circle or film industry by now. The story starts in a small village. Hong Xiuquan (Ray Lui) founds a "God Worshipping Society" which is subsequently banned by the Qing government. He thus leads some fellow villagers to rebel against the government and establishes the "Taiping Kingdom". Hong marries his younger sister (Chan Man Yee) to Xiao (Lau Ching Wan), one of the founders of the kingdom, but that provokes Yang (Felix Wong) who then plots against Hong. Meanwhile Hong is obsessed with a beautiful girl (Teresa Mo), who turns out to be more ambitious than just being the leader's lover...

在金田村起義。楊秀清(黃日華)、蕭朝貴(劉青雲)、石達開(黎漢持)、李秀成(歐瑞偉)及韓寶英(鄧萃雯)等先後加入，建立太平天國，震驚滿清皇朝。

及後清欲奪權，勾搭傅善祥 (蔡嘉利 )亂政，全遂將親妺宣嬌( 陳敏兒 )嫁給貴以制衡之，清含恨。後全迷戀葉苓 (毛舜筠 )，以致大權旁落，苓更藉清殺害異己，獨掌朝綱。眼見人才凋零，國事日衰，全終於醒悟過來，殺苓力圖反撲，只是大勢已去。全悽然服毒自殺，太平天國的夢想亦隨即幻滅。

HUNG SAU CHUEN (LUI LEUNG WAI) is a devoted Christian who thinks himself is the chosen one to establish the Kingdom of God on earth. When solders of the Qing government kill his wife, TO WAI CHING (SHEUNG TIN NGOR), CHEUN stages an uprising among the peasants and heroes from all over the country join him in the resolution. These heroes include YEUNG SAU CHUNG (WONG Y AT WAH). SIU CHIU KWAI (LAU CHING WAN), SHEK TAT HOI (LAI HON CHI), LEE SAU SHING (AU SUI WAI) and HON PO YING (TANG SHUI MAN), With their support, CHUEN is able to establish his "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom which alarms the Qing Government.

Unity and devotion within the Kingdom shortly give way to power struggles and dissension. Unwillingly to stay inferior to CHUEN, SAU CHING conspires FU SIN CHUENG (CHOY KA LEI) to stir up trouble. To counteract. CHUEN marries his sister. Yee Kiu (CHAN MAN YEE), off to KWAI so as to ally support. Then, CHUEN gets mesmerized by the beautiful YIP LING (MO SHUN KWAN), who tries to make use of the Qing Government to eliminate CHUEN. CHUEN comes to his sense in the wake of the crumbing of his kingdom. He kills LING, but it is too late to save his reign.
