　　本片改編自昂利比埃•洛齊的第二部自傳小說（第一部是《祖與占》）。法國青年哥勞特在巴黎邂逅了迷人、個性外向的年輕英國女子安。安是他母親兒時好友的女兒，恰巧來巴黎遊玩。

　　安邀請哥勞特暑假到她家拜訪，但其實是想把妹妹梅里愛介紹給他，湊成一對。梅里愛非常內向害羞，哥勞特對她沒有好感。但經過了一個夏天的相處，他卻發覺自己愛上了她，並向她求婚。

　　雙方父母都認為兩人應暫時分開，若一年後他們仍然情深不變，就可以帶著家人的祝福舉行婚禮。哥勞特回到巴黎，對梅里愛的感情也隨著時間而減退。相反後者卻越來越想念他，但暗地裡安其實也默默地愛著哥勞特……

　　現實中的杜魯福也曾跟一對漂亮的姐妹花發生過戀愛，就是跟她演過《柔膚》的房素娃•多麗雅（Francoise Dorleac）和《蛇羯夜合花》的嘉芙蓮•丹露 (Catherine Deneuve)。前者在拍完《柔膚》不久即因車禍而逝世，後者與他熱戀過後，即棄之如履。是以跟他大部分作品一樣，《兩個英國女孩與歐陸》也包含著某程度的自傳成分，有著一份切膚之痛。
　　One of Truffaut's most tantalizing romances, TWO ENGLISH GIRLS is the story of the lovely Anne (Kika Markham) and her intriguing little sister, Muriel (Stacey Tendeter), who invite their Parisian friend Claude (Jean-Pierre Leaud) to spend one summer with them in England, and then spend the rest of their lives wrapped up in their changing relationships with him.

　　During these holidays, Claude, Anne and Muriel become very close and he gradually falls in love with Muriel. But both families lay down a one-year-long separation without any contact before agreeing to the marriage. So Claude goes back to Paris when he has many love affairs before sending Muriel a break-off letter... Concerned not so much with feelings as with feelings about feelings, the film is simultaneously introspective and passionate and is a companion piece to Truffaut's earlier masterpiece, JULES AND JIM.
