YesAsia Editorial Description

A man without a country finds himself caught between the forces of a divided Korea in Typhoon, the latest film from director Kwak Kyung Taek, the man behind the 2001 box office smash Friend and his 2002 follow-up Champion. In this story of a dangerous game of cat and mouse between two adept adversaries, director Kwak reteams with his Friend leading man, Jang Dong Gun and adds Lee Jeong Jae (from Oh! Brothers) to the mix as the nemesis of Jang's character. In this tense, pulse-pounding adventure, Jang portrays a pirate by the name of Myeong Shin, a rebellious upstart who defects from North Korea only to find himself turned away by South Korean authorities.

Furious at this blatant snub, the fanatically motivated Myeong Shin decides to exact vengeance on South Korea, engaging in a level of terrorism that could very well result in numerous deaths across both Koreas. Myeong Shin's opponent in this high seas adventure is Kang Se Jong (Lee Jeong Jae), an honorable naval officer who'll do whatever it takes to bring Myeong Shin to justice. Much in the same spirit as the hit film Taegukgi, Kwak Kyung Taek's latest is a big budget blockbuster that seeks to comment on North and South Korean tensions, but here the emphasis is not on the bonds of brotherhood, but on the inescapable showdown that will befall these two protagonists! As the highest budgeted film in Korean Cinema history, with numerous locations including Pusan, Thailand, and Russia, Typhoon is one blockbuster that's sure to make waves among audiences everywhere!

Professional Review of "Typhoon (DVD) (2-Disc) (Korea Version)"

    February 7, 2006

Typhoon, the latest effort from Friend director Kwak Gyeong Taek, was very much a flagship release for the domestic South Korean market, having the highest budget in the nation's history and having been shot in various locations, including Pusan, Thailand, and Russia with a partly international cast. Unfortunately, despite being a deeply personal and uniquely Korean film, based upon and shot through with the tension resulting from the conflict between the North and South, it flopped at the box office.

The plot follows Sin (Jang Dong Gun, who also played the lead role in Friend), a North Korean who as a child attempted to defect to the South with his family but was betrayed, resulting in the deaths of his parents. Plotting genocidal revenge, Sin takes up with a group of Thai pirates, and steals a U.S. ship carrying nuclear devices which have been secretly manufactured in Taiwan. He is pursued by Kang Se Jong (Lee Jeong Jae, also in the 2000 romantic hit Il Mare), a naval officer who attempts to bring Sin to justice, but gradually comes to understand, and even sympathize with his foe.

Although from the above synopsis Typhoon may sound like a simplistic thriller, it is actually a complex and densely plotted affair, gradually revealing its secrets after a bewildering first act. The film does tend to jump around a great deal, with a large supporting cast of minor characters and the action taking place in a number of different countries. Once things settle down, this works well, giving the proceedings an almost epic feel. Although it does fall back upon what is a fairly unconvincing plot device, which seems to have been included mainly as a set up for the climatic scenes, the film is mostly intelligent and gripping.

It is not too hard to see why Typhoon failed to set the box office alight. It is a fairly dark and depressing film, and far from the Hollywood-style blockbuster many may have expected. Although, like previous Korean hits Silmido and Taegukgi, it focuses on the North/South Korea conflict, it treats violence and bloodshed as an inescapable, disastrous outcome, acting more as a guilt-soaked tragedy or cautionary tale. The film has a bleak, nihilistic view of governments of all countries, particularly those of South Korea and the U.S. (who are, as usual, portrayed as hell-bent on simply blowing everything up to solve problems), with politicians held responsible for the suffering of the Korean people.

Director Kwak spends most of the film exploring the character of supposed villain Sin, with numerous flashbacks depicting his ordeals and the sad fate of his family. Unfortunately this makes Sin the only fully fleshed out role in the cast, so the viewer naturally comes to sympathize with him, especially since the nominal hero Kang is a blank-faced and indistinguishable robot who mainly just follows orders and spouts the odd line of patriotic dialogue. This does leave the viewer in a fairly uncomfortable position, since, despite his undeniable humanity, Sin is quite obviously a homicidal psychotic with a frankly daft nuclear scheme.

As such, the film is devoid of the usual heroics, and Kwak wisely eschews explosive action and shootouts, opting instead for slow but intense espionage scenes and sudden bursts of violence. This does make it rather slow moving at times, and it does feel somewhat overstretched. Though never dull or boring, Typhoon is likely to disappoint those expecting a different type of film. In a way, the fact that its high budget has been highlighted is something of a misnomer, as most of the money was probably spent on shooting in different countries, rather than on pyrotechnics or special effects.

However, this actually works in the film's favor, as it is questionable whether the subject matter would have lent itself to brain dead bravado or exploitative entertainment. As it stands, Typhoon is a moving, genuine film which attempts to make a very personal case for the suffering caused by the North/South Korean divide, and more generally, by governments and politicians the world over.

Great action film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Jang Dong Gun | Lee Mi Yeon both compliment in this great action film. The typhoon they did is not at far compared to that hollywood movie.

The setting was taken in four countries, Taiwan, Thailand,Russia, of course Busan, South Korea. I just hated it they put those scars in Dang's face...but still handsome. His acting when he got to me his lost sister, was really touching...made me cry. The ending of the movie shows that the kids where happy as they rejoined their parents and friends in the next life.

Too Slow Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
Well I have heard different opinions about this film some says it good some says its bad.

I personally thinks this movie had wya to little action in it to lift it up from the masses of film.
Even if the stars in this film all does a great job of acting that can't deny the fact that this film is rather boring. When it is action is well done and sound and visuals is top notch.

Don't expect a god action movie because its not.
Instead you get a movie that has good acting along with a script that is pretty good but nothing fantastic.

This was one of the best movies of the year! Jang Dong Gun, Lee Jong Jae and Lee Mi Yeon gave awesome performances! The movie has excellent story line, well-executed action scenes and perfect performances from its 2 main actors. We haven't seen Lee Jong Jae in a while, but he delivered one powerful performance. This is a must movie for your DVD collection!
