Note to Universal
|
So this is my two cents of constructive criticism for Universal...I really hope some big wig from this record company reads this profund review. First of all, most of the artists on this label are weak. With such a bevy of weak performers, they need to lift up those artists who actually have talent and shine brightly in the midst of such dull acts. For instance, like Warner Music, they should have thrust one of their rising stars in the openning act, such as Hins Cheung. For Warner's 10th Anniversary speical, A-Mei was the openning act, and she was an excellent display of the fun and excitement waiting to unravel throughout the concert, not to mention she is one of the best entertainers the Asian music industry has ever seen. Taking Warner's lead, Universal should have done the same by having Hins appear first and sing a medley of his hits from his smash albums, "My Way" and "am/pm". I can tell you that he's got many great songs --both hip hop infused dance tracks, and power ballads-- this would have made the concert so much more enjoyable~!! I think Universal was trying to do too much by having a virtual circus on stage, instead of allowing performers to have a little spotlight on their own. Secondly, why on earth would you have Kelly Chen and Andy Hui sing the same songs in VCD 1 and VCD 3? The audience has already heard one person sing that song, there is no need to have both of them perform the same tunes. It really was a waste of time, and by the way, Kelly's version was much better. At least her voice and performance are tolerable. My last and most passionate comment relates to Hins. I was so blown away by his vocals, I didn't even realize I was watching a concert until he came on stage. Hins delivered a powerhouse vocal performance, and if I were the execs at Universal, I would definitely take note of this young man's talent. His voice was unsurpassed that night. I think he should go on tour and put out a concert DVD so that fans like myself, can start to quench our desires of seeing him sing live, because there's nothing like it. I can offer one bad thing about his performance, which is that he needs a new stylist and some practice with his stage presence. The look he had going with "My Way" was great -- youthful and vibrant (see the original cover of this album). Unfortunately, that has since faded... I don't know what his stylist was thinking, but Hins is not a 30 year old man, although he is very mature, he still needs to appeal to the younger audience, and he should therefore have a younger look. His haircut was just wrong. He looked too much like everyone else, besides the fact that it was a hideous do'... Hins definitely needs to tap into his "My Way" theme/mantra and break free from looking like all the other guys in the Chinese music industry, because quite frankly, their look is disturbingly ugly. And Hins deserves much more, what with his amazing skills, he should really get the attention someone with his talent needs. And why would they make Hins sing his Cantonese version of Blessing? His trademark sound is Mandarin, and other singers were able to do Mandarin.. so, why not Hins? I know that they were in Hong Kong, but Hins is just known for singing Mandarin, and he should stick to that. It is much MUCH better. I hope this has been helpful to anyone trying to get a good sense of how this concert went. My honest assessment is that, unfortunately, it's not worth getting. Most of the performances are plain and below par. The only two that really stand out to me were Hins Cheung (Blessing) and the dude that sang a duet with Kelly, (I can't remember his name, but he was great). Bottom-line: Universal has a true blessing in Hins, and they need to nurture and cultivate him into a real star. Invest more in Hins than any of your other artists because he is the only one worth listening to and watching. |

not really worth it
| i was a bit disappointed when i watched this the first time. some singers only sing 30 seconds worth of a song and then walk offstage until the finale. unless u really like ALL of the performers for this concert, i don't recommend it. |
