Not what I expected.
| After having her first two full albums for some time, I thought I knew what to expect from Ringo Shiina. Utaite Myori came at me from left feild. Her treatment of the somewhat eclectic choice of cover songs has left me even more inmpressed with the musical acumen of the young lady. She has always done her own thing, and made her music with a sort of reckless abandon. Never pandering to convention, she goes her own way with all the songs I recognised, most I have never heard before. She has stamped her indellable style on these songs and by doing so, in a way made the songs her own. I remember reading on her website that she felt she was letting her fans down by releasing a cover album ans aplogised for it. After hearing Utaite Myori I couldn't imagine how anyone would feel let down by this. Not her greatest work, but some of her most unique. I can't wait for the new album. Every Ringo Shiina album is like a present. You don't know what it is until you have unwrapped it. |

awesome
| this album was awesome. i just wonder why she put it onto 2 different cds. in any case, i dont' know what the other person was thinking. 3 stars? what compelled her to buy a shiina ringo album for only 2 songs. haha that's not smart don't you think? why buy an album if you don't know anything about the artist. baka jyanai no?! |

She Blew my mind Once again
| Depiste her one year absence this album definitelty prove to her fans that Shena Ringo is Back and ready to Rock our World again... Eventhough all the songs are cover... ahhh you can't even tell if all the songs were cover or not... Shena Ringo is absolutely a brilliant musician, whom she creatively remake all the songs into her own sweet-melodramatic-techno-acidjazz-blues-rock mantra... What more can I say She ROCKS! period... Mannnn.. I can't wait for her third album to come out (if there's one). |

Dissapointing it seems...
| When I bought this album from Shena Ringo, I bought it for two reasons only #1 because Kusano Masamune (Spitz) sang in one song. #2 because Utada Hikaru sang in one song. See, after I opened the two cd cases up and put it in the cd player. I liked the first song on the Kame cd (white one), then it finished, the next song started. I was totally shocked, to be honest - "I hated it!" I'm so sorry to all Shina fans & to Shina herself. He music is not for me. I would never buy a Shina record again. She even sings in German, French, and some other language that seems to be made-up. |

Shiina's Machina II
|
The covers on these discs are all over the place with very diverse styles. A few of the songs are in complete English (which are sang in a perfect English dialect BTW) and others are in European languages (sounds like French or German). This album turns the notch down on most of the Radioheadlike rock numbers found on the previous disc (Shoso Strip), so not ALL of these songs have that surreal-punk-rock sound that blend together. Which is porbably the point since they are covers. You won't hear Ringo letting out her signature shriek, and there isn't as much of the guitar feedback bombs. You will hear well orchestrated catchy melodies that are dramatically rocking while some that are nicely calming ballads. The first disc is in my player more than the second, so let me comment on it. Aquellos Ojos, Grises More and Chiisana Kinomi are real good. I also love the well done Beatles cover Yer Blues. I actually play these four songs a few times before letting the whole disc play. The other English covers are superb from a vocalistic point of view and you can hear the sheer power of Shiina's voice. They are also fun to listen to and remind me of covers from Bjork's Post. The second disc starts with an abstract number called Ich Liebe Dich OP 5 No 3. Then the disc moves into a few more English covers. She sounds like she is having a lot of fun here. Shiina is an amazing talent, and these discs show her range of talent. The album is unfocused and raw... something like The Smashing Pumpkins: Machina II. It is nice to hear Shiina with her guard down and not so serious on these discs. A little hard to chew for the first time Shiina listener, but worth the purchase. |
