Shocking tale of serial killer
|
Imamura Shohei's "Vengeance is Mine" stands out for its cold-blooded, matter of fact depiction of a psychopathic serial killer. Ogata Ken delivers a frighteningly realistic performance as the calculating killer. Ogata gets deep inside his character to find both the charm that lures people into the killer's world and the inhuman cruelty by which he then exterminates them. "Vengeance is Mine", however, is more than just a great performance by Ogata Ken. What really sets it apart is the depiction of the people (particularly the women) who are drawn into the killer's life like moths to a flame. By spending so much time on these other characters, the film is much more than just a story of a killer; it makes a statement about the desires and dreads that lie within all of our hearts. "Vengeance is Mine" is not easy viewing, but it is an important film. I recommend it very highly for a mature audience. To see Ogata Ken in an equally great role (but one that provides a terrific contrast to his role in this film), I also recommend that you check out "The Demon". |
