YesAsia Editorial Description
An adaptation of a popular true tale, Vermillion Door is a sumptuous Shaw Brothers production set in the opulent world of the Peking Opera! Kwan Shan (father of actress Rosamund Kwan Chi Lam) is early 20th century Peking Opera star Chiu Hai Tang, whose passionate romance with his beautiful co-star Luo Xiangyi (Li Li Hua) is doomed to end in tragedy. Though the two stage partners are happily engaged, Xiangyi gains the attention of General Ruan Shaowen (Ching Miao), who won't be deterred by a romantic rival, much less a Peking Opera actor like Chiu Hai Tang. General Ruan uses his power to arrest and torture Hai Tang, in hopes of securing Xiangyi for his own. General Ruan offers to release Hai Tang in exchange for Xiangyi becoming his concubine. But can the love between Hai Tang and Xiangyi survive the ensuing years of hardship? Also starring Ivy Ling Bor in a pivotal role, Vermillion Door features a story adapted many times before to stage and screen. However, none of the previous adaptations matches the pageantry and emotional power of Vermillion Door, a classic tragedy that will touch audiences even today!

The tragic love triangle of early 20th century Peking Opera star Chiu Hai-tang, his beautiful stage partner, and the warlord who forces himself between them, has been a favorite with Chinese audiences for decades. There have been numerous adaptations both on stage and scren, but none can equal the sumptuousness or star power of the opulently produced Vermilion Door. The superlative stars' traditional musical skills give an extra layer of verisimilitude to the film's fascination milieu and intense interpersonal drama.

Truly a classic melodrama
|
This movie is the very definition of a melodrama. The acting is quite broad, the good people are very good, the bad people are very bad, and the story is geared to put the audience through an emotional wringer. The one unique feature of this story is how Kwan Shan's character reacts to having his face slashed. That's an interesting plot twist that sets this story apart. I was particularly impressed by Ling Bo's performance here. She was 24 years old when she played this character, but did an effective job of looking and acting like a teenager. Moreover, she looked very much like she could be Li Lihua's daughter. Highly recommended, but I suggest to people new to this genre that they watch the film more than once in order to become accustomed to the rather operatic acting style. |

Good Actresses
|
The story was not quite logical or convincing as it developed but the acting was pretty good. Lee Li-Hwa looked elegant and pretty as a middle aged woman. The brief interaction between Lee Li-Hwa and Ling Po was very touching. Ling Po's performance was fabulous. This is one of the few films she showed up as a lady dressed relatively nowadays. She played a 17 year-old girl saying her lines with sweet voices and running around like a young girl. Her slender build fit just right for the character. She was an amateur Chinese Opera singer in the film and we got to see her new capacity on top of her versatile talents. |

A good Shaw classic collection
|
A moving story and great acting. Li Lihua, beautiful as usual, showed her opera talent as well as excellent acting from young to older. Ling Po, a change from her normal male portrayal, was just as wonderful as Li Lihua's daughter. A must-have Shaw collection. Looking forward to more superstar Li Lihua classics. |
