日本人なら誰しもが一度は読んだことがある、そして今もなお多くの人々を惹きつける童話作家・宮沢賢治。本作は、宮沢賢治生誕100周年を記念して制作されたファンタジー・ロマン（1996年12月、日本テレビ系にて放送）。「マクロス」の河森正治が監督・脚本・絵コンテを手がけ、ネコのキャラクターを上手く使って宮沢賢治自身の物語を綴っている。また、主人公のケンジの声は俳優の佐野史郎が担当、「平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ」の上々颱風が主題歌・挿入歌を手がけている。その他にもベートーヴェンの「月光」、ワーグナーの「ローエングリン」といった名曲が効果的に使われており、味わい深いペンシル・アニメーションと共に独特の世界を作り出している。
