YesAsia Editorial Description

He Ping, the director of the cult classic SWORDSMAN IN DOUBLE FLAG TOWN and the better-known RED FIRECRACKER, GREEN FIRECRACKER, enters the big time with WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, an epic battle between two heroic figures fighting for themselves and for their countries. When Li (Jiang Wen) refuses to kill innocent women and children, he becomes a rogue soldier without a land. Master swordsman Lai Xi (Nakai Kiichi) is ordered to assassinate him if wants to get back to to his home in Japan and see his mother before she dies. But first they must join together to help a caravan with precious cargo make its way safely across the desert--with a beautiful woman, Wen Zhu (SHAOLIN SOCCER's Zhao Wei), caught in between them. The gorgeous cinematography is by Zhao Fei, who shot such Asian epics as RAISE THE RED LANTERN as well as such Woody Allen films as SWEET AND LOWDOWN and SMALL TIME CROOKS. The lush look of the film is echoed by A.R. Rahman's marvelous score and outstanding costuming and set design. Ping masterfully recreates seventh-century China as horses and camels lead the protagonists down the famous Silk Road during the time of the Tang Dynasty.

"[Zhao Fei] turns his eye to the desolate ochre beauty of the western provinces. And the unadorned sight is as refreshing as an oasis." - Lisa, Schwarzbaum (Entertainment Weekly Critic), Entertainment Weekly, 09/10/2004

"His panoramic epic should wow any viewer with the natural splendor of white deserts, red mountains and green valleys." - Ned, Martel (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 09/03/2004

"A beautiful film with gorgeous natural locales....Chock full of battles with bravura swordplay, a sandstorm, much evil plotting, colorful costumes and a richly varied and evocative score..." - Kevin, Thomas (Film critic), Los Angeles Times, 09/03/2004

Professional Review of "Warriors of Heaven and Earth (Blu-ray) (US Version)"

January 2, 2004

This professional review refers to Warriors Of Heaven And Earth (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

It's really great seeing a movie like Warriors of Heaven and Earth -- something which you have not heard too much about that knocks your socks off. While it may have gotten lost in the hype surrounding Hero, swordplay fans would do well to seek this film out. This mainland production manages to escape most of the cliches of the genre and create a lively story with a heaping amount of action.

Warriors of Heaven and Earth's plot is thankfully simple compared to many other movies of the genre, which can come off as too complicated for their own good, especially to western viewers. Jiang Wen plays a solider named Li who becomes a criminal after he refuses to kill civilians. Banished to the desolate western part of China, Li (along with some loyal members of his platoon) makes his living guarding caravans from bandits. During one such job, Li runs afoul of a local overlord named Master An (Wang Xueqi) after he refuses to give up a precious artifact a young monk is carrying. While trying to battle An's men, Li also has to contend with an imperial guard (Nakai Kiichi) who has been sent by the Emperor himself to bring Li to justice.

The lines are drawn fairly early in the movie's proceedings. There's not a whole lot in the way of double-crosses or big secrets, and that works for this film. Director He Ping always keeps the movie going -- there's not any wasted time in subplots or romantic schmaltz. Warriors of Heaven and Earth reminded me a lot of Kurosawa's samurai pictures or Ford's westerns. The film lets the characters and the story develop naturally, without adding in a lot of fluff. Even though most of the characters are fairly stock in nature, the movie actually brings a lot of depth to them without hammering the viewer over the head with big showy overly-dramatic scenes.

But don't worry if you're the kind of viewer who couldn't give a crap about things like plot and characterization -- the action here is top-notch stuff. While it kind of lacks that "epic" feeling a lot of the great movies in the genre have (though, truthfully, that might be due to the VCD's full frame format than anything else) the stuff featured here is outstanding. While it does take a bit to get going, by the end of the film, if the fights don't get your heart pumping, then you need to check yourself into the hospital.

Eschewing the current computer-fu craze, Warriors of Heaven and Earth creates some of the most hard-hitting and explosive martial arts scenes this reviewer has seen in quite a while. When that's combined with tight story-telling, you have the makings of something that's (hopefully) going to be considered a classic a few years down the line after more people have had the opportunity to take in this excellent motion picture.

Attempted epic falls short Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
"Warriors of Heaven and Earth" wants to be a cross between a Chinese version of a John Ford Western and a Buddhist version of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." While He Ping clearly was entrusted with a big budget and managed to create some brilliant images with all that dough, the end result is a lumbering, pretentious mess filled with cliched characters and leaden dialogue. I won't give it away, but the ending is particularly silly. Your humble servant cannot recommend this one.

Ok movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The advertisement is over whelming, maybe thats why i do expected too much from this film. Its is ok but not that good. The fight scenes are very good. Emphasis on friendship, leadership and dedication is clearly stated in the entire film. Nice one.

the movie is good but it could have been a lot better if Zhao Wei had given more exposure. nonetheless, she is very pretty in the movie. she is the only reason why i watched the film. she still shines though she had less movie lines. she's gorgeous!

Slick But No Depth Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
This movie had a cool premise, cool characters and enough ethical conflict to really be interesting, but unfortunately it went nowhere. I was very disappointed at the waste of talent and lack of character development. The second half of the movie doesn't deliver, it just turns into a big battle sequence that doesn't reveal much about anyone. If you like action with no brains, then I guess it's fine, but in my book action is no substiture for a story.

it was not that good... Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
Sorry to say this, but this movie was not that good. I expected it to be better, based on what I have heard, but I was duly disappointed. The storyline was choppy and disconnected, and there was absolutely no emotional connection to any of the characters in the story. This movie also seemed reminiscent of "Musa, the Warrior," but truly, could not compare to it. I really thought that Zhao Wei's character was pointless and unneccessary, and that she was chosen for the role solely because of her popularity. Her role was so small that any Vicki fans would be disappointed. Like others have stated, the Korean movie, "Musa, the Warrior" was much better than this. "Warriors" cannot even compare to "Musa," which I think was one of the best movies I have ever watched. The point: it's one of those movies that you would watch only to say that you have watched it, but even if you didn't watch it, you wouldn't be missing anything.
