Professional Review of "Way of Blue Sky (Japan Version - English Subtitles)"

November 4, 2005

Way of Blue Sky is one of those films that is very difficult to write about, not because it is overly complex or because there isn't anything good to say about it, but for the opposite reason. Very reminiscent of Shunji Iwai's work, Way of Blue Sky is a teen relationship drama that prizes character well above plot, so much so that it ultimately is a film to be experienced more than discussed and dissected.

Takahashi is a popular junior high student, a gifted athlete who seems blissfully unaware of his high status amongst the girls of his school. He has a tendency to befriend the social outsiders of his class and mixes easily with all. He is well liked by many, so it comes as a shock when he announces that his family is moving to America at the end of the current term and he will only be with his friends for another two weeks. When he also lets it slip that there's a girl he likes in their class, the fistful of girls holding a torch for him are essentially given a timeline to discover if their feelings are returned.

A film of both self-discovery and loss, Way of Blue Sky rides the emotional wave set in motion by Takahashi's impending departure. Its youthful protagonists - adults very seldom appear on screen - are forced to confront the fact that the world changes, that their lives are about to change, and to try and respond accordingly. They must understand their feelings and act on them while there is still time to do so. In short, over the span of two weeks, they must take their first steps away from adolescence and into adulthood. It is a finely crafted film, well wrought and filled with strong performances by its youthful cast.

Way of Blue Sky is a strong, smart film, the sort that will build its reputation and audience slowly and very likely launch more than a few of its young actors to higher profile roles.

Alright... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Well, I didn't know about the pirate thing with HK DVD so I think I should do as Ic says and buy the original versions from now on...
Anyways, I didn't really find this that interesting maybe because I was expecting something more romantic... It's actually more about old and new friendships... And a bond they share with each other... I got confused of who was who and I still don't quite understand so stuff... I'd watch it once but I wouldn't watch it twice though... For me, I don't think it's worth buying...

gud movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Not so much a romance film, but a film about relationships and self discovery. The performances by the young cast are uniformly excellent giving believable and natural performances which really brings the film to life, making it genuinely affecting. The story on the whole is v. good and never felt cliched. At times sad but also a very heartwarming tale, now one of my fave films.
Only complaint, is to avoid the HK DVD like the plague, it's like buying a pirate disc - letterbox, vcd like vid quality, muffled sound... AVOID! I liked this film so much I went and got the Jap version too, thats much better, so if you know jap or can read english, get that version instead.
