導演︰小津安二郎
Director: Ozu Yasujiro

The lives of Professor Komiya and his socialite wife Tokiko are turned upside down when their spoilt niece Setsuko comes to stay with them from Osaka. Setsuko discovers Komiya lying to Tokiko about going off to play golf when in fact he's gone to a Ginza bar. She follows him and insists on being taken to a geisha house. When their conspiracy backfires, Setsuko incites Komiya to teach her overbearing aunt a lesson. Komiya slaps Tokiko. However, to Tokiko's disappointment, he soon apologises, but Tokiko is charmed by his manliness. On a date with Komiya's student Okada, Setsuko negotiates how they will treat each other once married.

An Ozu comedy classic Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"What Did the Lady Forget?" depicts the marriage of hen-pecked Professor Komiya (Saito Tatsuo) and his owlish, overbearing wife Tokiko (Kurishima Sumiko). Prof. Komiya has accomodated himself to his wife's controlling nature and created domestic peace through some elaborate deceptions that enable him to live as he wishes, rather than as his wife demands.

Into this delicate balance comes niece Setsuko (Kuwano Kayoko) a beautiful and willful young woman who becomes like a bull in a china shop. She wants to smoke, she wants to drink, she wants to stay out late at night, and she is not interested in what her aunt has to say about it. Moreover, she wants her uncle Komiya to adopt the same brazen style.

Over the course of this brilliantly conceived comedy of manners, we see young Setsuko learn the wisdom of Prof. Komiya's more cautious approach. Watching these contrasting characters butt heads and, ultimately, restore the domestic calm of the Komiya household is a joy from start to finish.

This was only the second talkie that director Ozu Yasujiro produced, but he already had a sensitive, well-honed ear for dialogue. I recommend this lighthearted gem for everyone.
