Set during the last years of Empress Wu Zetian's iron reign, the drama reimagines the youth of Xuanzhong, the Tang Dynasty's longest-reigning emperor, combining history and royal intrigue with folklore and fantasy for an exciting and entertaining period adventure. Whatever It Takes co-stars popular actresses Annie Man (Colorful Life) and Tavia Yeung (Twin of Brothers), as well as reliable supporting players like Evergreen Mak, Liu Kai Chi, Helena Law, and Law Koon Lan.

Shortly after Emperor Gaozhong's death, Empress Wu Zetian seizes power and eventually takes the throne herself, establishing the Zhao Dynasty. To escape his grandmother's bloody witchhunt, Prince Li Longji is sent away as a child, and by chance gets adopted by a civilian family. Twenty years later, Prince Li is now Gao (Benny Chan), a small-time swindler wiling his days away with his brother (Evergreen Mak). By a series of fateful encounters, Gao comes to possess the Dragon Pearl, a mystical object that determines the fortunes of the Tang, and releases mischievous immortal Bi Yao (Annie Man) who was trapped in the pearl. Gao has little choice but to assist Bi Yao on her dangerous mission to find the "Dragon Prince" who will restore the Tang Dynasty. Little does he know, he is looking for himself.

　　龍珠蒙塵，令武剛天登基；妖孽作亂，殺盡忠良；天子、仙女；誓奪大唐江山。
　　高宗年間，天下混亂，百姓受苦，相王之妻為怕兒子李隆基（陳浩民）給欲奪帝位的武則天誅殺，於是放其於竹籃中隨水漂流。天庭玉帝得悉妖孽作亂，乃因當年賜給大唐以鎮懾群魔的“龍珠”已蒙塵，遂派仙子碧瑤（文頌嫻）下凡間抹拭“龍珠”。豈料碧瑤被吸入“龍珠”內，令武則天得以登上帝位。玉帝乃命碧瑤尋找真太子並助其恢復大唐江山。另方面，隆基在養母撫養下已長大成人，更無意中再遇生母，得獲“龍珠”。碧瑤因緣際會得跳出“龍珠”，她認定隆基是有緣人，要其一同尋找“真龍王子”。“龍珠”乃國運之所繫，隆基、碧瑤從此落入險境，招致殺身之禍。隆基其後驚悉自己的真正身份。誓要奪回大唐江山……

The Empress placed his young son, Luther, (Chan Ho Man Benny), into a basket on the river in order to save him from Wu Zetian (Law Koon Lan). Luther was fostered by Lady Ko (Law LAn). Luther fell in love to Mo Yung Sute (Yeung Yi) so as his foster brother Ko Lik Sze (Mak Cheung Ching) did.

The Leading God in heaven realized the "Dragon Ball" was being covered with dust. He sent a goddness, Brigette (Man Chung Han), to earth to clean it. Unfortunately, she was sucked into the ball and Wu finally became empress. Years later, Luther recovers the "Dragon Ball". Brigette somehow escapes from way. Accidentatly he realizes that he is the real prince....
