After Warriors of Heaven and Earth in 2004, Mainland director He Ping returns five years later with the long-awaited historical drama Wheat. Set during the Warring States period of ancient China, the film stars Fan Bingbing (A Battle of Wits) as one of many Zhao women who unwittingly take in two enemy Qin soldiers played by Huang Jue (Everlasting Regret) and funnyman Du Jiayi. Backdropped by the great war and upheaval of the times, Wheat tells a smaller but no less poignant story of reluctant soldiers, waiting women, and the importance of harvest that yields both bawdy humor and devastating tragedy. Also co-starring veteran actors Wang Xueqi (Forever Enthralled) and Wang Zhiwen (Together), the film eschews genre conventions, letting small lives play out with great significance amid beautiful rolling fields of golden Wheat.

Harvest time has come, and Qin warrior Xia (Huang Jue) is determined to go home to reap his farmland. Pursued by troops, he and a fellow deserter, mouthy tagalong Zhe (Du Jiayi), find refuge in a Zhao village full of women waiting for their husbands and sons to return from war. Knowing full well that the men of Zhao were all slaughtered following their defeat to Qin in the Battle of Changping, Xia and Zhe have no choice but to pose as Zhao men and bide for time. They quickly make up a story of Zhao victory to Lady Li (Fan Bingbing) and the village women, but what happens when the truth is revealed?

　　這是一個發生在戰國時代，五天四夜的故事。

　　潞邑，趙國的一座小城。三年前，城主劇蔥大人（王學圻飾）剛剛和年輕美貌的驪（范冰冰飾）完婚，就率領本部族所有成年男人和秦國人去參加秦趙長平之戰。驪和婦孺老幼們每一天都期盼著趙國能打退秦國，男人們好早點回來……

　　長平，趙軍大敗，秦軍連夜屠殺俘獲的趙卒，場面既殘酷又悲愴。秦兵暇（黃覺飾）為了回家豐收的慾望，悄悄離開了戰場。在逃離路上，暇遇到了年輕的秦兵輒（杜家毅飾），兩人性格迥異，從相互猜疑到一起踏上了歸鄉之路。同時，一支又一支秦軍糾察隊也在設局捕殺秦趙兩國的逃兵。

　　黎明，潞邑的河邊出現了昏厥的暇和輒，女人們將他們救進城。兩人醒來得知身陷趙城萬分恐懼，只好謊稱自己也是趙國人。潞邑的女人們看到兩個“趙卒”，興奮不已，她們希望從兩個“趙卒”嘴裏聽到戰爭和男人們的消息，開始用最好的禮儀款待他們。而兩個秦國人知道趙國的男人們早已死在屠殺中，為了活命，暇和輒在全城女人們的亢奮面前編造了趙國大勝秦軍的謊言……
