When The Clouds Roll By

YesAsia Editorial Description

Popular Shaw Brothers leading lady Jing Li got her first lead role in When the Clouds Roll By, an overwrought romantic drama presented with atypically gorgeous Shaw Brothers splendor! Susu (Ching Li) is an emotionally troubled young woman still tortured by the loss of boyfriend in a plane crash. Things change when she meets the dashing Yifei (Yang Fang), a handsome intern who strives to heal Susu of her emotional scars. But Susu's problems are less about grief than about repression of her memories, which threaten to consume her if they resurface. Lifei has his own problems: he's drawn to the beautiful Susu, but he actually has a girlfriend (Pan Ying Zhi) in Japan! But there may be more to the death of Susu's boyfriend than she originally thought. Will the past prevent Susu from ever having a fulfilling life? Full of melodramatic twists, suppressed feelings, and hidden secrets, When the Clouds Roll By is a romantic melodrama that evokes heartbreaking emotions, especially when the gorgeous Jing Li is on the screen!

Ching Li delivers an outstanding performance in her inaugural lead role for Shaw Brothers in the gripping When the Clouds Roll By. Like muddy cloud, her character pining over the loss of her lover that died in a plane crash, is mixed with enough clarity to recognize who she is, but has enough shades of gray to make her overcast mind sink in the gloom of schizophrenia. Ching went on to star in over 50 other Shaw's films.

Engaging romantic drama Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This film's perspective on mental illness is rather hopelessly outdated, but don't let that deter you. Jing Li delivers a terrific performance that will keep you glued to your chair throughout this very watchable movie. While YesAsia's comments on the movie describe it as "overwrought", the opposite is true of Jing Li's acting here. She is effective in this role because she underplays her mental illness. Instead of throwing endless big tantrums, she approaches most scenes with an attitude of a kind of gentle perplexity. Her underplaying draws you into the movie and has you rooting for her to recover her health. Yang Fang also does a tremendous job as a young intern struggling to remain true to his professional and romantic obligations. I was expecting this film to be a soapy melodrama; it is much more and much better. And, oh yes, it has lots of groovy 1960s surf rock at the way cool Casablanca Club.

Great title song Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
I just want to comment that the title song is a very good and famous one and it is sung well by Mona Fong. In the movie, Chiao Chiao as a guest star, plays a nightclub performer and lipsynchs it to perfection. Since this is Ching Li's first starring role, I had expected to see an insecure actress. But she was really good in the role, ably supported by Yang Fan. Pan Ying Tze's skill to slip into different roles is praiseworthy (I dislike her very much after seeing this movie). This is a decently made drama, not the best from the Shaw stable but one worth seeing.

When Clouds Roll By Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I really enoyed this film. Very well scripted and very well shot. I came across this movie quite by accident in a video store in Irving Street's new Chinatown in San Francisco. I'm amazed by how diffrent the quality and genre of filmmaking was back in 1968. Though I was only three years old then, I remember the values were more innocent back then. This film just tells how romance was even back then an everlasting thing if given a chance. Ching Li was hot! Too bad I wasn't in my 20's back then... I highly reccommend this film for couples who want to spend a quiet evening in front of the TV together.

When the clouds roll by Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
This is one of the late 60s Shaw movies. Simple plot, but the theme song is " everlasting ". Await for the
next Shaw "love" movie : BOAT.
