YesAsia Editorial Description
Perhaps most familiar in the West for her role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, veteran actress Cheng Pei Pei is one of the greatest action heroines of Hong Kong cinema. She shot over twenty films for Shaw Brothers during the 1960s to 70s, including classic titles like Come Drink With Me, Golden Swallow, The Jade Raksha, and Princess Iron Fan. Retiring from film after marriage, Cheng made a brief comeback in the mid-70s, headlining Kung Fu Girl in 1973 and Whiplash in 1974. Written and directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Ting Shan Si (Blood Reincarnation, Fury of King Boxer), period actioner Whiplash is the last major film Cheng Pei Pei made in the 70s and one of her last leading action heroine roles.
In the waning years of the Qing Dynasty when the Allied Forces descended upon Beijing, the Empress Dowager flees the capital with her jewels. Her procession is attacked by bandits along the way, and the jewels end up hidden in the mountains, away from the world's eye. Ten years later, villager Old Sha discovers the treasure in a cave, and decides that it must be returned to the government. When word spreads about the treasure, a group of bandits shows up at his mountain inn, but they'll have to get past Old Sha's beautiful and willful daughter (Cheng Pei Pei) first.

Whip crack away!!
| Not exactly well known in the west, Whiplash is a pretty entertaining kung fu flick, with the beautiful Cheng Pei Pei as the titular character. Its not exactly jam-packed with stunning kung fu, but theres something about it that keeps you watching. Check it out and you'll see what I mean. Its not in the Legendary Collection for nothing... |
